The concept of having cabinet access on both sides of island is nice but I would be concerned about those who use stools there will muck up the doors. Maybe you have space at one end to do overhang for a couple stools, only if needed as a seating option.

if you do end up adding seating there, I would use these cabinets for seldom-used pieces. You can opt for handleless doors there.

Your choice of cabinet style affects how your overhang is supported. Your choice of countertop affects the amount of support needed or not. Your designer must integrate accordingly.

All of the above. Storage to me is always a big deal in a kitchen so if it gives you more and is not used for everyday things go for it . I agree no handles and shoes off when sitting the counter unless you have areally big overhang feet will kick the doors.
