layout ideas please

Looking for some furniture/layout ideas for this space. It’s just my husband and I and we want this space to be more comfortable for watching TV. It’s an awkward space because it’s long and narrow…if the fireplace wasn’t there I would put a sectional there. TIA!

i would put the section you have in front of the fireplace.. and FIND OUT some info.. so you can make a decision about using that space ..

also.. have you considered the tv over the fireplace?

in all honesty.. how often do you use the fireplace.. for all its romance.. i wish mine were gone ...

Hi. There are likely options here.

In order to help you, could you please

    1) Post photos of all 4 walls of the space. Stand back and capture the entire wall. You posted 2 walls. Need full tv wall and the 4th wall, even if there is a long opening there.

    2) State whether you are willing to be eliminate the fireplace and pay for that to happen.

    3) Does any furniture in there need to stay? (the 3 pieces of seating furniture are not working well together).

    Thanks!

CDR Design, thanks for the response. See additional photos below. No not willing to remove fireplace, we do use it. I would like to get an idea keeping this current couch but chairs I can part with. If this couch doesn’t work however…maybe???

Hi. Thanks. To be sure, I would need a to-scale floor plan. But, I can at least guess at some things with these photos.

    Option 1

    1) Place sofa facing fireplace. (float it out some from the current wall tv is on.) Not sure how wide sofa is or how much walkway would be left next to it to walk down the hall and to the stairs

    2) Remove mantle

    3) Hang tv over fireplace.

    Option 2

    1) Float sofa out with its back to the kitchen. (This will look best with a light-colored sofa, but go ahead and try it.) You can always add a very narrow table behind the sofa (you'll likely need 2 of them side-by side.

    2) Place tv on long wall where sofa is now.

    3) One or 2 chairs.....I would have to see where the sofa is oriented....maybe one chair by the fp and another at other end.

I work best with a floor plan, so some of this is guessing.

Try moving the furniture and see what you like. (dont have to move tv...just sofa for now.) I'd move the chairs out for now.

It looks like this room is only about 12' wide?? Plus, walk through space? Need 3 ' doesn't leave much room with that size sofa. TV very oversized for the room. Can't watch TV easily from the sofa? So, first thing is when you can, sell the sofa and get one that fits across the room facing the fireplace with a nice size TV over the fireplace. Use the bracket you have since it probably would allow pulling TV down over fireplace? Then you might get a couple small scale chairs in each side of the fireplace. You probably need a "condo" size sofa, which is typically less than 84" long. More like 72-78" long. You could get away with probably 38" depth sofa. Chairs 28 x 28 max. So depends on what you want to do. Right now, the elephant in the room is that very large sofa. If you post room dimensions (width in feet and inches; length, in feet and inches; width of openings; width of total fireplace; widths of the windows, and length of wall TV is currently located. Post length of current sofa too. Can't do more without those details. Check sofas on APT2B website. Made in America products, customization with good delivery times.

Would shrinking the opening into the kitchen a bit and moving some switches to create a larger bit of wall to put the TV across from the sofa be worth it? I know people like things open, but I think you'd rather be able to see the TV better than have a direct view of the refrigerator

Dimensions of room are 12x18, the wall that has TV is 7’

Thanks. What is the length of the sofa?

Couch is 7’ 2” and wall where TV is 7’4”

I would get a regular console under tv for all the components. Sell all furniture and get a small scale recliner and 3 comfy swivel rockers to place around a coffee table, either glass top for more visual space, or square with drawers for throws, games, books. Use 2 floor lamps for ambient and reading light. This looks like a fun project.

I think you are best off removing the mantle and placing tv over fireplace

Sorry, short wall where tv currently is.....showing shorter than it actually is, as I did not see your comment until after I created the floor plan.

But, it is actually good news, withe the sofa being slightly shorter than the actual wall.

I did not add in end tables. You could consider a console table behind the sofa and add lights there. Then, use C tables for ends on sofa. This would save space on the 12 foot width, which is where you really need to save.

Small round end tables by chairs by fp or C tables.

Thanks everyone I appreciate your time and advice!

If….new seating was an option, moving tv and if enough width in front/behind seating (can skip coffee table/use side tables) and small scale furniture, I think overall layout, room in general and tv viewing would all benefit.

Sectional in reverse so L-side is facing fireplace

    Another shape

Maureen, thank you. Are you suggesting TV goes on the wall where couch is now?

That was my option 2 below (but as I mentioned, a lighter-toned sofa would work better than your current.)

A sectional will cramp this room too much and require a shirt seat depth. My drawing is to scale. Each square equals one square foot. I put a 12” sofa table behind a sofa and put sofa about 6” from the wall. I put a “plug in wall sconce” for light near sofa and you could do a ottoman instead of a coffee table if desired. I think your fundamental decision is to move the TV. That will open most options. Here is mood board with options. All budget friendly. Sofa is the Haven from West Elm. You can custom size this sofa and I have several clients who bought this and love it.

You can get the sofa table with black instead of gold if you prefer too. Put your pretty art on same wall but might need to reposition it slightly with sofa in new position.

Yes, but with a console proportionate to the tv’s size and tv lower.

Agree about no sectional. Either tv on current sofa wall with light-colored sofa floated out or sofa facing fireplace (could still use current sofa in that case).

Although, light furniture in general would suit this narrow room.

CDR Design, good to know re: lighter coloured furniture.

One other thing, what the heck to do with those speakers? Husband will not part with these.

Tell him that like all technology, products are smaller and higher quality. When is his birthday? Take him to Best Buy or a specialty audio video store and they will show him the latest.

What is the age of the speakers?

Next: put some furniture movers on your sofa. Move it in the 2 places we discussed and you can use the chairs as your new chairs. You will have to ignore the color of the sofa for now. Just seeing how you like the setup.

What CRD said^^^. He will love the new technology for sound.

With sofa facing the fireplace, there would be room to leave speakers on that 7’ wall. Just need more powerful cables and longer of course to reach to connect to TV. The newer wireless options are far superior to the large ones he has too. But, you have to get him to store!
