When you say a heat pump would be more efficient, I assume you mean lower operating cost compared to another HVAC system. If you are looking to have lower cooling costs, then the heat pump would require a higher SEER2 and EER2 rating compared to the AC system you are replacing. For heating costs, you would need to compare the fuel cost and efficiency of your present heating system to determine if there would be any operating costs savings.

I think you would get very little value in a trade for you current AC condenser. Most manufactuers warranties become void if the equipment is uninstalled and installed in another location. The HVAC contractor has to sell it as used equipment, and bear the risks if something goes wrong during the removal and the new installation. The contractor has to hold onto this condenser until he finds a customer who can use the size and model you have. I think you are going to be dissappointed in the trade value.

You have not provided enough information to determine if you will reach break even on this investment. Information needed are the size of your house, the current heating system and fuel cost. the current brand and model of the AC condenser, the location and the cost of the current AC system.

In a word, no, it wouldn't make any sense. You wouldn't get anything for your old system and the new heat pump condenser wouldn't be any more efficient than a comparable AV condenser.

Thank you both for your responses. I appreciate what y’all have to offer and it’s pretty much what I was thinking too. I do want to continue to explore for the sake of due diligence. Especially since I know that investments which pay for themselves and save money due to higher efficiency should be enacted sooner than later for best effect. I see your point that this may not be the case sktn77a. I realize the issue here is that I already have the value of a new system in hand and that I probably would’nt get much for it. I suspect it is not an expensive or efficient system. Anyways, here is the info about the setup. The home is 1,200 sq. ft. located in Houston, TX, which as you probably know can be extremely hot. I have only been here a few months(none of them summer) so I can’t say for sure the cost of fuel and electricity, but a quick look and my experience paying bills points to it costing about $60/month on average to heat/cool. The condenser is a 2021 Rheem TCF3617STAMCA (I saw ~$950 new cost from a search) The compressor is Rheem SA1438AJ1NA (I see them selling for ~$500 used) and the Furnace is a Rheem S801CA050314MSA Natural Gas Furnace (I cant find price info).
