Brother Stefan and edema

I know Frances Williams has a bad reputation with edema, but I didn't realize Brother Stefan was susceptible to it. (I see now it is in the "Spring desiccation burn" list at hostalists.)

Is this a frequent problem with Brother Stefan, or is it just a sometimes thing? I don't recall any issues last year with this plant. How does it compare to Frances Williams in terms of susceptibility?

(This is edema, right?)

Looks more like sun scald to me. fw when it unfurls is super sensitive to any direct sunlight, even for a short time. that young tissue needs time to mature before it can handle direct sunlight.

edema is from waterlog cells, water pooling on the leaves causing them to burst and collapse. also happens more in young and unfurling cells, but not exclusively.

sun scald is common in seiboldiana types with yellow layers.

put it in full shade and hope for the best.

It's not the corrugation I'm concerned about, it's the white areas.

My FW burns with even the least bit of sun directly on it. I have a sport of FW that's even worse. My Brother Stefan gets afternoon sun and does well.

Miles, FW burning is actually an error in the breeding. Go to F in the library, find FW and scroll down….there’s a comment about it.

The only reason that I keep my FW is that it's the first hosta that I ever bought. It lives in an area that I would never plant another hosta due to root competition from a magnolia and pin oak. But it has so much shade from the nearby trees it only "burns"/ gets brown if it somehow gets some sun directly on it. My Brother Stefan sits out in a bed which gets sun from 2-5 pm but has just a bit of shade from the house. I want to see how it does this year--fingers crossed--it does ok where it's at.
