I would just add art over the sofa and on the wall behind the pool table. Something related to the guys' interests if that works, or just something abstract to add color. Get their input if they are at all interested in giving it.

@kandrewspa photo also shows how the rug under the sectional is pulled out toward the TV which softens that area. Note how the photo shows inexpensive c-tables, a floor lamp, and a sofa table behind the sectional with lamps for ambient lighting and a place for phone chargers, etc. If you like that look, you don't have to buy one long sofa table. You can butt 2-3 identical narrow tables together to make one long one.

If the posters in the window are being used to block an unslightly view, consider a bottom up shade instead and hang the posters on the wall.

Other functional and decorative pieces you can add are a pool cue rack to keep sticks, bridges, racks, etc corralled which will also protect your walls and sticks. Some racks can be mounted on the wall or there are floor holders. A light fixture over the pool table will mean overhead lights don't have to be on if some kids are shooting pool and others are watching TV.

This is the type of room where floor to ceiling curtain panels hung wide can really give one the impression of larger windows. Since it's kids using the space they would never be opened, and they would give you the opportunity for some color/texture and pattern in the room. They would also give you the light control you need in the TV area. Then the posters could go elsewhere. I bet your son could find a few more that would liven up the place.

Is the TV mounted on a bracket so it could be pulled out and down? My neck hurts just looking at the photos. TV is just too high in relation to seating! Otherwise, good suggestions already made.

My main goal would be to connect the entire space with color and add items that are functional, fun and practical. Don’t know how much you want to do, so just throwing out ideas.

If rug can be returned, I’d get a smaller rug (as most of it is under sectional and too light). You’ll save money and highly suggest a dark washable Ruggable, add a few cushions to complement.

Find fun family pictures, get frames at Ikea and buy Bristol board and cut to size. A side table and lamp would be helpful.

The fireplace wall looks unfinished/bare. I think painting the wall a dark color will feel cozy and can even go a step further, like below. There are all kinds of ideas on line, if closed storage/surfaces would be useful.

On pool table side, continue the feel and consider some of these ideas.

Have a direction before buying anything and your husband and kids might have some ideas.

I agree that the spot that looks most unfinished is the fireplace wall.

Built ins would be my first thought.
If not, maybe wallpaper and a bench on either side of the fireplace.

I like the idea of a wall ledge also, with some bar stools. But not sure if it will look out of place, across from the sofa.

Shades of green or blue are considered calming..which might be advisable for the “ boys”..plus window shades that fit into window openings may be may be more practical as there is no chance of them being pulled off accidentally🤷🏻‍♀️…lots of good ideas above ..your boys are lucky to have such a great space…having had 5 brothers I know how much “ trouble” they can get into🙄

Another ..interactive..fun feature is a good size blackboard..with a lip for colored chalk…boys and pops can keep pool score ..draw pictures…mom can leave reminder notes😘…etc.,etc…but i would hold back on too many pillows..(fights)🙄…big pretty baskets on the floor as catchall for quick cleanups ….extra blankets or pillows…for watching the games on tv…any other toys that accumulate🤷🏻‍♀️

Our pool table did not get used as much by kids and friends as did the ping pong table top that sits over it. Get togethers revolved around board games more than movie watching. Today kids 'get together' on line to play video games. Providing teens with a dart board does not seem like a wise move assuming they will be using the room for long periods unsupervised. Boys are ordered toward two things, building or fighting I read recently. Watching what they do with their food in the school cafeteria enforces this in my experience. If you are decorating for BOYS then you are done. If you are decorating for the fun of it/desiring a photo shoot ready space I would not then give it over to teens. We found one of DD's friends sitting in the middle of the pool table one evening. I would caution creating a room where your kid is constantly trying to keep his friends from doing damage to overly nice, overly fussy rooms.

Maybe no I- pads should be a rule🤷🏻‍♀️..as a parent I would try to control the use..in any case….it is never too early to encourage your kids to not live through the internet

What is your kid into? Are there cities they like, National Parks they have visited, do they like particular movies, animals, buildings, architecture, video game characters. Send them some links to poster stores and ask them to pick some out. If they truely don't have any preference at all just go with some abstract art and call it a day.
