I pulled mine out and have regretted it ever since. Must get a new one again.

For sure @peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada and what is 'admirable' about this Rooguchi is that each of the last couple of years I see obvious sign of voles/mice having made tunnels right in and around it. But no problem for this clematis...water off a ducks back ;).

That's growing nicely. I had one in a pretty big pot and it too put out a lot of stems. Maybe it exhausted the pot...something made it die. I did root some and put a plant of it in an unfavorable spot where it is doing great. Right now it's about 3.5' tall with multiple stems. So I'm impressed with its toughness too. Mine was a heavy bloomer the first year, less so the second year. But it was tired of its pot I guess.

Sigh, I thought I would plant it as a groundcover in the wood...but it really couldn't cope with the dryness and the general wilderness thing going on. Just got smaller and smaller and I left it too long to dig up and rescue.

Wow, Rouge, your Rooguchi must be very happy in its location!!! i planted one last year, but it was too shady…I moved it to a sunnier location, but it succumbed to powdery mildew regardless. There’s now a small shoot coming up through the ground, but it’s entirely possible it’s a weed instead of Rooguchi.

I paid an eye-watering amount of £££ for a teeny plant in a 9cm pot...but it was the only supplier in the entire UK and needs must.

A good variety of clematis aren't the only plants hard to source these days but since we are talking clems...so much of what I see the last few years are Raymond Evision offerings :(.

@diggerdee zone 6 CT, your rooguchi seems like it is an "over achiever" in that it is able to to climb nicely and neatly in that 'arbor' even though rooguchi is non vining. Do you help it make it up that support?

Rouge for several years I did not support them, but about two years ago they really started getting wild so I just put some twine loosely encircling the whole thing, plant and arbor. I did this in two spots, one about half way up, and the second about 3/4 of the way up. But really that is just a loose support - for the most part it stays fairly upright, save for a stray vine here or there.

Hopefully this thread will be on going this season so we can keep track of the size of each Rooguchis :).

Not quite June, no open blooms and it is about 6 feet tall.

Aaah, mine is just topping out at around 2 feet...but is healthy and looks like it will grow more basal shoots. My last one was glorious, only rivalled by a vigorous purpurea plena elegans.

I hope my Rooguchi grows up soon like all of yours! Mine was planted last year, but in too shady a spot, so it got terrible powdery mildew. I moved it to a sunnier location, but the damage was already done and it soon shriveled completely. I half expected it not to come back at all this year, but it did, although barely. And then bunnies nibbled on it, so here we are, one shoot at about 12 inches and a second smaller shoot trying to recover from bunny damage. 😩

Mine died in a pot waiting for me to plant it. I neglected my pot ghetto terribly. oops. I killed Princess Kate too. : (

Here is my Rooguchi today. It is on a 7 foot tall obelisk and the top has flopped over about 2 feet. Nothing else I can do except enjoy. It is now in a bit too much shade to be a prolific bloomer, trees got larger.

Sherry there's still a good amount of blooms there!

Unfortunately, my Zephrine Drouin (and therefore the Rooguchi intertwined with it) fell backwards off my arbor in some very strong winds back in May. Was not able to get out to put it back up and when the rose started budding up I decided to leave it until after bloom. So my Rooguchi is not as tall as in the past but still vigorous!

It is a mystery why this has almost vanished from commerce in the UK.

Not just in the UK @rosaprimula UK (Cambridge) Z8/9. I am being a bit facetious where I am, but if it aint a Raymond Evison offering then you will have great difficulty finding it eg Rooguchi (and of course many others).

Its a Monster!

Spectacular! And you know, even though you have it supported, look how all the uppoer growth is still pretty much upright on it's own. This plant does seem to be nice and sturdy despite the delicate appearance of each stem!

No pics on my end. My poor Rooguchi is still flopped over my fence since the wind blew down that and Zephy in the spring. Every single day I walk under that arbor and think, geez, I've got to put these plants back on the arbor!

Wow, Rouge, that is certainly impressive, and I love the contrast of the deep purple blooms with the deep red of your spigelia blooms I see there in the background. Very, very nice!!

3 weeks after the most recent picture (5 posts above) and it is still crazy in bloom. (Fingers crossed that it wont develop powdery mildew.)

Mine is still alive, after powdery mildew got it when it was newly planted last year and rabbits got it this year. It’s about two feet tall with zero blooms. BUT….your pics give me hope that someday it might be something beautiful.

Same here, Corgi...but I did stick it behind a clump of alstromeria and promptly forgot about it. I pulled most of the alstroe flowers and lo, Rooguchi is still hanging in there.

Thanks very much 'corgi' and @djacobs. It can be a superb addition to one's garden. Close to 3 months of flowers.

Hey @lovemycorgi z5b SE michigan I have had powdery mildew with it in the past :( but not this season. I think the extra rain we have got this summer, coupled with the much larger obelisk has helped in this regard.

and rabbits got it this year

Funny you mention this as rabbits are such trouble in our garden but I have not had them eat down Rooguchi (but yes for a many other plants...including clematis.)

I tend to take your plants with a pinch of incredulity, Rouge. Like, you know, there's plants, like mine and most everyone elses's, then there's Rouge's...which always look totally pristine, floriferous and fabulous. I don't know how you do it, I honestly don't. Pic after pic of truly marvellous specimens. I am no-way holding myself to your standards. Mind, everyone else seemed to have pretty outstanding experiences with this one...even me, back when I first had it.
