You can do what I do (cos I am lazy). I keep several plants in pots(mostly geophytes such as watsonia, gladioli, lilies and some salvia) and literally sink them in the ground so when it comes time to lift them, I just haul out the entire pot. I use the same size black plastic pots and swap and change around according to what is looking good.

adding wood chips to clay doenst sound right .. the usual recommendation is to never amend a planting hole..

@rosaprimula UK (Cambridge) Z8/9, I like how you think! I have a ton of nursery pots that I could use for that, too. Potting soil isn't cheap, though :-/

What size container would you recommend for these bulbs? I would do one bulb per container.

@nicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis, thanks for the pics! I love your deck, you've made it look very tropical :-) Do you have cordyline, too? I have one in a large container, but have to put it in the greenhouse over the winter. I think that the red / purple leaves go well with elephant ears, so one would look right at home on your deck.

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5, the red clay soil holds a ton of water, and some bulbs rot in it. Irises do well, but deeper lily bulbs don't always come back.

I'm not sure if that issues applies to colocasia bulbs, but I was just thinking of something organic that I could add to improve drainage.

Jason..yes I’ve had cordyline..it did look nice with my tropicals..
