Someone recently commented on another thread that lighting is very personal, and I agree. One person's "yuk" might be another person's "yes!" So I recommend doing a lot of searches for inspiration photos and post of a few of your favorites here. If you want more advice, please let us know what your hood vent will look like (match the cabinets? Stainless? Chimney style, barrel style, other?) Also, are the cabinets in the main part of the kitchen just primed, and will be painted to match the island?

My personal preference for lighting is white or milk glass globes with no or minimally exposed bulbs (to cut the glare.) I had clear glass in my last house and felt the need to clean often. However, many people love clear glass or no-glass cage style lights and those look gorgeous in many kitchens too. Personally, I'd shy away from fabric or basket / wicker styles just for cleanability, but again that's very personal and I'm sure many people are very happy with those choices.

Pay attention to sizing and height. Pictures below show a general sizing guide (there are several you can find online) and the 'balloon trick' I used in my old house for determining a comfortable height.

Finally - get a good lighting person to guide you. I learned so much from my KD (she has certifications in and a passion for lighting) and I'm grateful I have her to help.
