Look for a solid color stain, rather than a paint. There are many dark brown choices for stain. Try to match what you already have.

Thank you all! There are 2 old paint cans with notes on top saying they were used on the house. (photos below) Both are Olympic stains in "Mahogany", the older one oil-based. I did buy Olympic latex stain in "Royal Mahogany" a few years ago to repaint an outbuilding. It turned out a horrible flat cold purplish-brown.

Olympic also makes a "Deep Mahogany" which I guess I could try. The browns in the cans are a bit warm in tone. But I think part of the problem when I painted the outbuilding was the loss of the luminescence of an oil base. I hate the flat, dead, rubbery coverage of latex acrylic paints, but as an artist I may be overly-sensitive about

such things. That's how nothing gets done around here. ha!

The can above with dripping paint, looks to be the color of the stain, that was used on the house. I would use that exact same stain again. Personally, I have had very good luck with Olympic stains, so I would keep exact.

Thank you. I hope Olympic's "Deep Mahogany" is the right color. Their "Royal Mahogany" turned out to be purple brown! And they no longer make just "Mahogany." Maybe I should take the paint can in the store with me for a match.

sw black fox is a favorite of mine, less red then what you are showing...

Maybe just me, but I find the dark brown a little bland and boring. In a woodsy setting like this, a nice green with brick red trim might be nice and would work well with the stone. Don't look at these for the house style, but for the color palette:

Definitely take paint can with you.

My MCM was built in 1955, long and low, and from photos it appears to have always been darkest chocolate brown. I have no plans to change it. No trim colors at all, all of it is brown. Garage doors, windows, front door, the works. Looks a little dark until you step inside and most of the back of the house is glass.

There was no paint can here so I don't know what it is. It seemed like exactly the same color as my BILs house. I took his leftover gallon, brought it here, tried to touch up some deck railings in back with it and while perfect color match, wrong sheen. A custom mix so numbers, no name.

My only objection is pollen time (like alder, now) when the yellow pollen builds up on the exterior sills quickly. Keeps DH busy washing.

It's a wooded acre, mostly deciduous trees.

Your dad had good taste. How nice that you are there now! Do take the can to the store along with photos (close-ups).

I like the way the brown blends the house into its surroundings. I kind of thought, it probably had always been that color.
