I think that a valance, corner ceiling, shelf above the tile, etc are all the same. If you are going to add this sort of topper you might as well keep what you have because visually, they are all very similar.

Yes I guess that is true. Have struggled with this area for years. Have never been happy with it! If I added floating shelves as someone mentioned would you not think they would need to be symmetrical

IMO draw as little attention to that really bad design as possible so not fancy light and for sure no decor.I assume this is a new to you kitchen so wait a while before even removing that weird ceiling part . See how this space functions for you . IMO corner sinksa re always bad design and BTW no decor on top of any of the cabinets.

I’d remove the ledge and clock and skip a hanging light. The tile’s height shouldn’t be a problem and of the two options, it‘s the much better choice. Don’t add anything on top of the cabinets and to draw the eye elsewhere, add a larger (lower) transitional light over table.

I think the main problem is that when you walk into my kitchen that sink area seems to be the focal point and it really takes your eye so I thought I needed to find a way to make it more appealing

If you post more photos of the space then perhaps we can help you brainstorm and find a different focal point.

I think that by making the changes suggested above that it would actually make it less of a focal point.

I think you can make your table, chairs, and chandelier the focal point. Right now it is not because the table and chairs blend in with the cabinets. If you painted or replaced them with something a different color that area would draw your attention.

Well that is something I never considered but definitely a thought. Possibly an off white do you think??

The easiest way to make it a focal point is to introduce a color that is not already in the room. Don't make it blend in with the cabinets, tile, floors, or door. Off-white could work but I would pick a different color. Or do off-white but add a colorful rug underneath.

We'll help me out here. Like what?? My kitchen has very little color. Mostly wood as you can see and antique white walls. I'm open to any suggestions

You might be able to just change your chairs and chandelier. I would start with new chairs and then decide if the table works. I think turquoise or teal would look good. Not necessarily these chairs but upholstered ones.

Get rid of the pendant and replace with a recessed light.

Get rid of decor above the cabinets.

Get a beautiful new chandelier over the table.

Get a larger interesting piece of art for over the console table.

Have the old intercom removed or moved and place art on that wall.

Looks like an interesting house. Just needs some freshening up removing some of the 1980 vibe.

I don't have a good understanding of the shape of the room but from what I can see, I like the round table. Also, I agree with @chispa. I would add a large piece of art over the table and I would replace the curtains with something to match the chairs and in a thicker fabric. I would also consider painting the door so that it matches the wall. Right now the white door draws attention. You want the focus to be all on the table and chair area.

I like a lot of the suggestions here, your kitchen is nice, it just needs a few tweaks.

I would paint the trim around the door the same color as the door, the contrast unnecessarily draws attention to it and the visual lines make that spot look cluttered.

Is that your only dining area? If not, you can replace the table and chairs with an island.

I have no idea about your style, I just grabbed some bright rugs so you can see another way how adding color makes a huge difference.

A rug under a dining table, especially in a kitchen seems impractical.

@jodyrah I've used poly rugs for decorating under kitchen and dining tables for years. They're nearly indestructible and easy to clean even with pets and kids. And often very inexpensive. The new-ish patterned indoor outdoor rugs are even more easy care. I wouldn't use wool or a fluffy pile or a light color but other than that, I think rugs are a great way to add style to a dining area.

Personally, I think the dining area is fine, though I do like the turquoise pop of color.

For me, the elephant in the room as that weird molding/hood/whatever that thing is over the sink. Remove it and your eye will automatically travel elsewhere. It’s weirdly shaped and draws your eye to the off kilter corner.

Leave the corner canopy the cabinets need it. Change the light to a recessed downlight instead of the hanging light

Replace the room chandelier and hang it lower in the room.

Thank you! My husband built these cabinets and we truly struggled with the corner not knowing how to tie it all together! Your the first to suggest that and I also thought the light was wrong as soon as we put it up. What would you suggest just to sit back there if I remove the light so it doesn't look so empty. Also what are your thoughts with putting some things above cabinets since I have such a high ceiling. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Your husband is so skilled. Really beautiful work.Don't put anything on top of the cabinets. You already have the cool beams as a focal point up there and anything on top of the cabinets takes away from them.

You are so used to seeing something decorative in the sink area that it might feel naked to you at first, but I promise, to the rest of us, it looks very normal to not have shelves, plants, hanging lights or anything else there. Remove the top piece above the sink. Don't be concerned about the white wall part at the top with no tile. You have many arbitrary heights in this room that end in just white walls so it will look right at home!

I love your round table. There is a lot of angular feeling to the space already and a circular table is nice.

Wow. That takes a ton of skill and talent! Can he revamp the corner ceiling into a corner desk or vanity table for a different room? Maybe a floating shelf for cookbooks or plants? If it cannot be revamped, I'm not sure I would remove it.

Well I wish he could but I'm sorry to say he passed away! He also built the table! He was very talented. Boy do I miss him!

This is actually how they were at first and I removed the arch a while ago because it seemed to close the corner in too much

I like it with the arch more. As for the chairs, I would have slipcovers made for them.

Oh dear lord maybe I should put it back up! I just thought it looked so closed in! Like I said we just didn't know what to do with the corner when we built them and we came up with the arch idea just to tie the corner together

It seems like they may have done this built out overhang both for visual interest, but also to add a light fixture without impacting the beautiful wood ceiling. You may want to remove that overhang and then place a wall sconce over the sink to maintain the lighting and use the wiring that's in place.

How about adding shelves with puck lighting underneath?

You don't need to put anything above the cabinets. Just because you have a high ceiling doesn't mean you need to decorate up there. Let it be simple and Zen. There's enough going on at eye that a plain area is a good contrast.

Eventually, you may want to do something up there but usually when you fully decorate the people-level area then the upper space looks light and airy, not bare.
