Scape update in Indiana

Bob and I spent several hours outside today digging plants for the Herb Fair, which is this Saturday. By the time we quit (we aren't finished yet), we had dug 91 double (or more) fans. While I was looking around (searching for scapes), I found two, both on the same plant. Bob and I had already checked our early bloomers--Kiss of Paradise, Buddy's Betsy, Lava Flow--to no avail. Then I spotted these two scapes on By the Golden Rule, which was planted just last year. The flower is a small lemon yellow, but it will be exciting when it opens. We got this variety because it has a reputation of blooming 3 times a season.

Our striped iris is blooming. I thought this was Batik, but I think we lost it. Bob bought some striped iris from the hybridizer a few years back. Somewhere we have a violet striped one (if it's still alive). We don't remember the names.

Wow…that is alot of digging. I hope your sale goes well! I’m glad to hear you are starting to see scapes, just means the time is getting closer here. I’m not expecting much from the only iris I have left, it is just starting to scape.

That Iris sure looks like the colors on Batik. That Iris in particular has tempted me every time I've seen it, but I just don't have room in ground (as well as the soil they like), so years ago I asked at the Iris show if you could grow Bearded Iris in a pot. Almost all responses were "NO", not long term. Well, I tried it anyway and found out they were right. I saw it at the nursery last week, and almost weakened and bought it again - but I resisted the temptation in the end. It is just so special to my eyes and I hope you haven't lost yours..........You all work so hard for these festivals. I hope it pays off for you. I know you take a quality product to sell........... Great to see buds. I found 2 of my daylilies with scapes up and budded, so it's beginning here too..............Maryl

Does Gnu Again ring a bell for the name of the iris? Batik has a bit of purple based foliage, so you can tell if it is Batik. I have grown iris in pots, but they just don't bloom as well. I am not good at growing anything in pots. They probably need extra fertilizer and water to grow well in a pot, and I am not great at that.
