ny goes from cold z5 as high as long island 7... give us a big city name.. more specificity of where you are...

keep in mind.. the most important thing in a pot is the medium.. media.. not the plants... do you have any experience growing trees in pots long term??

Not crazy talk like 3-4 feet? Just need some thing with height in this area while the other planters will have decorative spring flowers

you arent going to find a 3 to 4 foot tree .. except a very expensive japanese maple ... which might not appreciate a pot long term ... it can be done .. but experience would really help ...

Look at dwarf conifers. Easy to grow in containers long term and most are hardy enough to withstand a NY winter outside. Other possibilities are tallish but narrow evergreen shrubs.....Sky Pencil holly, Green Spire euonymus, Dee Runk or Graham Blandy boxwood.

How about a standard (tree form) hydrangea?
