Sheila, that was Perlite. We’d had an exceptionally wet winter that year and I was concerned about drainage. You can see from my footprint in the picture how muddy it was.

Jacqui, I’m in awe of your garden, your home, and its setting. I really enjoy seeing an authentic California Victorian restored, with people living in it and roses … everywhere everywhere.

Absolutely beautiful! Nice job! I've transformed my yard from weedy grass and boring sell-your-house shrubs in the past few years, too. But I tdidnt think to take before pictures. 😅 I love your garden.

Kristine, it’s because I read this forum that I chose those roses. It is a little crowded in there right now, but I like it that way.

Librarian, when we moved in here it was all ”sell your house shrubs.” All green, watered on sprinklers and borrrring. The only color came from the many, many Dr. Hueys that sprouted allover the beds. They’re still coming up, four years after their official removal.

Dr. Huey, blackberries, bindweed. 😅

Luckily no one planted roses in my yard ever.... Even though the house was built in 1960. So i only have to deal with the last two. Oh, and the mint I stupidly planted myself not knowing any better having moved here from the desert.
