We got brand new kitchen cabinet doors and had them professionally painted. I spilled a tiny bit of water maybe an 1/8 of a cup on the countertop and it ran down the cabinet onto the floor. I immediately wiped it up and a couple hours later I noticed that the cabinets are warped at the bottom. The cabinets are maple with HDF panel. I was told the HDF is the way to go for kitchens and baths as it is more durable than MDF and humidity resistant. I was told the paint used was extremely durable. I’m not sure what to do as kitchen cabinets sometimes might get water splashed on them especially around the sink. I’m guessing the water seeped down into the seem. Are shaker cabinets supposed to be sealed?

Cabinet company said they’ve never seen this happen unless prolonged water exposure to a significant amount of water.

Another drawer front was damaged after I posted the original post from literally a splash of water.

Washing hands, reaching for towel and wiping the water up immediately. So a total of 3 pieces.

The painting company took the damaged doors/drawer fronts and took 7 weeks to get back to me saying they ran tests and worked with their cabinet installer. That it’s a cabinet issue, the wood swells instantly when any water is applied, not a paint issue. Their cabinet installer said there’s online companies known to supply crappy cabinet doors. I feel that I purchased from a reputable online company. They recommended reaching out to the cabinet company again to send new doors and cover the cost of refinishing. Ya right, like that will ever happen. The doors were $2,000 and painting was $5,000. I did however reach out to the cabinet company with the paint company’s response.

I’m not sure what to do at this point- probably living with the damaged cabinets and constantly checking them to make sure there is no water drips or damage but I’m so upset how you pay professionals to do good work and end up being screwed over as a homeowner because neither one will take responsibility!***
