Hosta to rhyme with cost. Not to rhyme with coast.

Hosta with an ”ah”, like ”hostage”.

In my version of English host-age also rhymes with cost! ( ɒ in IPA)

One could have a host ’a hosta. Like in a doctor’s office, say ”ah”.

Hostile with an A on the end instead of the ile. As in how I've been feeling clearing, digging up, and resetting the hosta beds this week. Hostile and a pain in the Ahhh... can't type that here :) But hosta sounds an awful lot like swearing right now.

I'm sure that once they settle in and pop over the summer it will soon return to the soothing H-ahhhh-st-ahhhhs again. A more rolling and pleasureable draw to the vowels.

I always thought Hosta was pronounced exactly like it is spelled!

I have been having fun with the word as it is always misspelled anyway. I add a soft w in the beginning, so it is 'who sta' with a strong sta. Have a great day!

Jeb, yes pronounced as spelled, but do you say “hosta” to rhyme with costa or pasta. A long O (not oo) as in “go” or an ah sound as in pasta?

I pronounce it like Little Hoss from the show 'Bonanza' with a "ta" at the end. When I was younger and learning about plants I was told that it didn't really matter how a plant's name was pronounced, (within reason) as long as the people discussing the plant knew which plant they were talking about! In my lifetime I have heard some very creative pronounciations of plants!
