Seedlings Have Started

A few seedlings have started blooming in the last two days. Most are on short scapes with few buds.

I Remember You X Kindred Jewel is one of the few early seedlings with good branching and bud count. It has four-way branching and at least 17 buds in its first year to bloom. The scapes are short though.



Grandma's Smile X Bubblegum Delicious #1 - The blooms are a darker, richer pink than the past two seasons, but the scape height and bud count is less than previous seasons. It had good increase last year.



Stinger X Razor Sharp - This is its second year to bloom. The flower size is larger than last year, and the color has improved. But scapes and bud count is lower.



Dragonfly Dawn X Bowtie Affair #1 - Third season of bloom for this one. Last year it had more ornate patterns on its first blooms.



Gypsy Cats seedling X (Razor Sharp X Spacecoast Night Vision) - This first-time bloomer has grayed purple petals on cool mornings like Trahlyta and Teddy Bear's Picnic. The purple gets darker throughout the day, and it ends up a dark purple with a slightly darker purple eyezone. It shows a good toothy edge even after a cool night.



It looks like several other seedlings will be starting later in the week.

    Wow, great group of seedlings. Nice variety. I think Dragonfly Dawn X Bowtie Affair #1 is one I would choose.Not that the others are bad but the form is what I like .

    Nice bunch! My favorite is I Remember You X Kindred Jewel. Very pretty! I love the color, eye, edge and form!

    Julia - Your favorite has a pretty face, but the plant habit is less than stellar. It is planted in back of taller plants. Maybe it will shape up when I move it so it gets more direct sun.


    Brad - Your favorite is my favorite of the group. I was taken with the colors and the double edge of blue lavender and white.

    These are all so pretty. Do you think they were impacted by the late freeze?

    Nice seedlings, they all look really nice, but my favorite is the 1st one.

    Kate - Yes, I think most of the early daylilies were impacted by the late freeze. I also think evergreens were hurt by the several days of below zero temps in December.

    The freeze strikes again! Still very pretty if the freeze did cause mischief...I love the last one, Dragonfly Dawn X Bowtie Affair #1 - has quite a pattern. the others are all lovely with good edges. A good start to the seedlings.

    Kay - Yes, I thought it was a good start to the seedlings. I think some of the sepals are a bit wonky after the buds got critter repellant earlier in the week. The two with ffo's today were quite blah and will be culled. I'm excited to see what the coming days will bring.

    Such a pretty batch of seedlings. The weird weather has bern such a downer for the early blooms. This has me wwondering what I will have here. We have only had 1/2” of rain the past 2-3 weeks, did some watering, earliest ever to do that.

    Sherry - I hope you get more rain soon. Last year we didn't have any rain at all in May. So far, we've had a bit each week. Last week we only got a quarter inch, and this week there's none in the forecast. I started watering last night. I usually water all during the month of May, but I've been too busy weeding and planting to water. I still haven't gotten to several beds to weed, and weeds are starting to pop up in the very first beds I cleaned out in early March. I give most of my attention to the seedlings, and the registered beds suffer.

    Nice group of seedlings, Debra. The Grandma's Smile seedling is a beautiful shade of pink with a nice ruffled edge. The Gypsy Cats seedling looks interesting. I like the ones that can show different faces based on the wieather. My favorite, though is the Dragonfly Dawn seedling. It has an interesting shape and the sepals are superb.
