Magpie, I saw flax during the Winter last, and I think it froze out in the Spring/thaw we have. I hope it is not gone for good.

My Bleu Magenta is doing great. Violette started blooming first along with Donau and Erinnerung an Brod and Bleu Magenta is just starting bloom. This is inside my courtyard wall. I'll try for a photo tomorrow.

I do have nepeta and Rozanne geraniums and various other blues. I have bluebonnets reliably in the field I was trying for the flax.

Librarian - Peter's Joy looks a lot like Augusta Luise! I love the picture right above that one. Oooh!

Magpie - I love your flax!! That blue is extra special. Your archways really look good. What will you be growing on them?

Carol thank you. I grow different veggies on that arch each year. This year it will be vining tomatoes, a new vegetable to me called "yard long beans", and some sweet peas and morning glories on the panels that needed to "rest" for crop rotation reasons.

The clematis is Margaret Hunt. I think it may be my fav and contrasts so nicely with Honeymoon.

Purple Hood. Sort of silly name. Descends from Robin Hood hybrid musk.

Chris - utterly gorgeous!! The color is divine...but, like you said...the name is a bit strange until one knows about its parent, Robin Hood. :) :)

I loved my roses, rhodes, azaleas, and fushias! I gad some veggies and many fliwers, too!!! Maybe I will share my Portland gardens photos sometime. It was 6 years ago. Live tge PNW-I lived on the west coast most of my lfe! Beautiful! (I also lived in WA & CA.) Now in NY ! Travel is nice! I love your Wueen of Sweden & WS2000!

Too many to count, Kitty. I have OGRs from Europe and the warm climate Teas and chinas and noisettes and species roses. Everything grows here except Rosa gigantia which is too tender.

@Feiy Lo (PNWZ8b), Your yard is absolutely amazing!! How do you keep your roses looking so healthy? Do you spray for pests? I'm dealing with rose slugs on all of my plants right now and it's been such a battle.

Chris - your Bliss is gorgeous...especially next to that VIVID blue!! Love this combo...and Bliss sings!!

Jo, I'm sorry you have to deal with rose slugs. I've had some but nothing serious. I just cut off damaged flowers or buds, same goes for thrip damage. If a particular rose gets too badly infested with same pests every year, I replace it. My nastiest pest is actually rabbits. They are extremely destructive in winter and early spring. I've had some roses got eaten to the crown. Thankfully most of them came back. I also have mole issue, but they are all over the neighborhood, so I decided to let it be at first and pretended they were helping me loosen the soil. LOL.

I don't spray but plant many plants that attract beneficial insects, especially early spring flowering plants (with small flowers). I have lots of hoverflies, parasitic wasps, and ladybugs in my garden. If there are small holes in the leaves or the flowers are occasionally eaten, I don't really care. I just grow more plants to make those little imperfections less obvious. A great reason to go shopping!

I'm no expert, but I do think that the less stressed a rose is, the better it will be against pests. Besides choosing disease-resistant varieties, the most important thing is to provide the right amount of water. I have sandy soil, so even though I have a drip system installed, it's still easy to underwater. I found that roses get attacked by more pests when they were short of water.

Gardening in zone 3 is definitely tougher than I thought. What roses do you grow?

@Feiy Lo (PNWZ8b) Thanks for the advice! I've been trying to keep them on a good watering schedule so that they aren't stressed. We have had some issues with bunnies here as well, but strangely they haven't gone after my roses. They did however devour the most beautiful limelight hydrangea tree. I currently have a purple pavement, morden blush and john davis. The john davis is such a joy, it blooms like crazy and is such a gorgeous rose.

Beautiful photos! I am in the middle of transfering these roses from our previous home to the new place. Some of them are so big, I am thinking about to use a truck to pull them out.

@rosecanadian Thank you! This is year 3 for that section of the border and I'm so happy with how it's done this year. Every day it somehow looks even better as the flowers all open up. As usual, half the path is unusable because I don't have the heart to rip out enough seedlings and they get all overgrown, but I can live with that for a few weeks (or more). Yeah I don't know what else to say, I'm just kind of in shock that it's turned out so well this year and I'm staring at it all the time. I'm about to waste away in front of it like Narcissus in front of his reflection.

Vicky, your roses are so fantastic, every one of them, but I especially love the romantic look of Ferdinand Pichard. That's one of the most evocative photos I've ever seen of it.

It makes me feel good when I sniff it every spring.....it is one of those special roses that has power to make you feel good. Even though it only seems to bloom once for me it is definitely worth having

What beautiful roses in this thread! I cant wait 'till the roses pop here. We've had a truly abysmal spring / summer up here so my roses have only just started to bloom. So far, only the rugosas are in full swing. The one exception is PJPII, which I got as a bare root this spring.

DC - oh that's beautiful...especially with the purple surrounding the white.
