Tasty squirrel meal

I planted an own-root Julia Child two months ago and it was doing great until this week. Apparently sqirrels stripped all the leaves. Is this bush a goner?

It will most likely be able to grow those back.

Sometimes I'm tempted to make a tasty meal of squirrel. They sure love eating my rose buds and yet I never see them eat the fruity hips. Our squirrels aren't native and they're spoiled, we live by a bunch of hazelnut orchards and there are hazelnut trees in my neighbors yards. But I guess young rose leaves and rose buds are just too tasty. SquirrelSquirrels need to eat etheir veggies too.

I hope the squirrel stops messing with your plants Jana.

Squirrels 🐿️ 、and other animals 🦌、🐰、 🐦 always have feast in our yard. Out of our 20 or so fruit trees, we normally harvest handful of fruits each year. My husband the other day finally took action and installed this cage beside the peach tree. He has got one squirrel every day for the past two days.

This little guy is really fat and released to a nearby park.

We are surrounded with squirrels and I’m so thankful our cat keeps them out of the garden. Maybe you could set out some kitty kibble and lure a stray kitty to come around and chase the squirrels off! :)

Last night, when I read the title of this thread, I knew before reading it what you were going to say. But for some reason, tonight, all I could think of was eating squirrel when I read the title. Laughed to read others thought the same! We have a tree with green apricots, and last week, we heard the weirdest noise outside the window. It was a squirrel sitting on the fence, eating a green apricot. Today, I heard the same, and it was eating another one. DH thinks it's picking them up off the ground... I sure hope so.

Blue Mountain, you're lucky. squirrels here aren't scared of the cats.... They're vicious about chasing the cats away 😅

You know, I've been on twice since your thread came up and each time my brain fools me into thinking I'll see squirrel recipes when I check it out. Argh! But who knows? Maybe they taste just like chicken?

Yes, a nice plate of fried squirrel and cornbread would hit the spot, but I'd prefer a vole banquet for my hunter kitty, Finn. I lost three roses to voles this winter. Losing roots is more lethal than leaves, I think. None of it is good. Anyone know any vole recipes? Diane

Diane, I have a good quail recipe lol! But they are way too adorable!

Before we had all our barn cats, we had lots of squirrels and roof rats. My son made a trap with a 5 gallon bucket half filled with water and a stick horizontally placed across the top. There was a round can on the stick and he put peanut butter on it. The rats jumped onto the can and it would spin and they fell off and drown. Rats are smart and that worked for maybe a week. Then they wouldnt touch it. Doesn't work for squirrels though. They can jump right back out lol.

My hubby and his brother grew up hunting and would shoot and skin out squirrels, bread them up, fry them, and eat them! I will ask him what they tasted like lol!

Its funny, our barn cats aren't afraid of squirrels but they dont touch our chickens. The broody mama hens have put the cats in their place several times. Those cats are terrified of those hens.
