@popmama (Colorado, USDA z5) What is the internal dimension of the openings in the Essentials wastebasket, at the narrowest part?

Top is 10" wide, bottom is 7". The holes are 1/2" though. But it works like a cheap charm for me.

@popmama (Colorado, USDA z5) I have a 1/2 inch sieve already. Some mixes I work with have 5/16-inch lava, and occasionally, those get trapped in the 1/2-inch opening.

Get some hardware cloth in 3/4 inch and make your own sieves.

Thank You beesnees ! I rushed out to look at some of my Surplus Xs this need. I easily saw Expanded Metal, Chicken Wire, Hardware Cloth and Etc that could be used. In some cases double the wire to get the Gauge you need. Think Out Of The Box!

Thanks, but not my thinking outside the box. Gardeners have been making their own sieves out of hardware cloths well before me. Not all gardeners focus on specific sizes and go more large, medium, small sort of sifting. But a lot do like to use sizes and there are a variety of sizes to choose from as you already found out HU. I wouldn't recommend using the chicken wire though- it looks sturdy enough but does not hold up as well in a sieve situation. A lot of expanded metal meshes are great for the job like hardware cloth can be. Heh, if one is a basket weaver, one can weave their own sifting baskets too :)

I should have referenced to "Chicken Wire in Layers" could be Adjusted and Economical as Weaving. "Depending On The Need And Challenger"!

@HU-811797333 I’ve tried to adjust screen sizing with multiple layers and found that it doesn’t work - larger pieces still pass through and/or get stuck between the layers.
