Hi,

Can anyone tell me what they think this magenta rose is please? It has medium fragrance.

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you.

Also, some thorns but not too thorny. Leaves are quite dark and rounded.

Although you don't mention whether or not its a rebloomer, I'm going to assume it is, based on the foliage style.

We have only lived here a few years. It‘s a rose recently found hidden under a tree not growing so was moved in winter therefore this is the first year so not sure.

Keep us posted. It looks very pretty.

I don't think it's The Prince, which I've grown for nearly 20 years. The blooms are darker than the photo above, but his color varies some, especially in spring when he can go two tone occasionally, which is pretty funny. Sometimes he does sport the button eye. Here are some photos. Diane

That is a magnificent specimen.. I have grown the Prince and .it is true he was always the darkest rose in the yard. The original post shows a lighter color than mine ever was, but I can't think of any other modern rose that has that particular combination of quartering, petal substance, and purplescence. Beautiful whatever it may be.

Thanks to all for your contributions. Could it be William Shakespeare 2000?

@Diane Brakefield that Prince of yours is exceptional.

Thanks, Alfie. The Prince can be a picky dude, especially in heat. He is a continuous bloomer, and when it's hot, his blooms can get wonky. I don't think your mystery rose is Wm Shakespeare 2000. The beautiful color is so unusual. I hope we find out its name because I'd like to grow it. Diane

Another candidate might be Munstead Wood - the color is much more variable. Here is an older post discussing color variability https://www.houzz.com/discussions/3633104/munstead-wood-never-thought-i-would-ever-like-this-rose Also see the photo by Rose Paris near the end of this discussion has a similar coloration https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4940375/munstead-wood-reviews. My Munstead wood too young to have bloomed yet.

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked starmade
  • 2 years ago

Not Munstead Wood. I've grown two for years with variations in color depending on the weather and never had a MW look even close to the mystery rose. Diane

    Lighter

    Darker

    Is this dark enough?

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked Diane Brakefield
  • 2 years ago

This mystery rose is nowhere near thorny enough to be MW.

Yes, for sure, Magpie, and I totally forgot about that. with all the photos I have of MA, I could not find a good one just now illustrating the awful thorns. Diane

My absolute last guess will be celestial night: couple photos from different locations: Chamblees https://www.chambleeroses.com/catalog/product/roses/all-roses/celestial-night/ and two Help me find photo https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.338529 and https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.338531 -- looks closer in leaf shape maybe

Starmade, Bingo, I think, though there may be other good guesses out there. And by the way, thank you for the nice comments on The Prince. Diane

Thanks Diane; If there is even a chance I'm right I want to buy celestial night right now!

@starmade - thanks it does look quite a bit like Celestial Night. They don't seem to sell that in the UK from looking online that's the only thing. That Munstead wood is lovely Diane. Yes I don't think it is that.

Too bad; not only do I not know what it is, but I won't be able to get it if I find out. Hope more suggestions come in.

Hey all, I just checked HMF (Help Me Find Roses), and punched in Plum Perfect, a Kordes rose. On page 2 or 3, Alana Strang in Australia has a beautiful example of the entire bush. I think it might be the one, and the UK would have it. Also look at Rose Man Stan's photos on the next page--good match there, too. Diane

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked Diane Brakefield
  • 2 years ago

Thanks Diane! They do look strikingly alike for sure. It doesn't come up for sale anywhere online in the UK though. There are places oversees that UK people use like Tuincentrum Lottum in the Netherlands so previous owners could still have purchased from here.

I have grown plum perfect for years, and its never quartered like your picture even in cool weather; I don't think it is plum perfect anyway..

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked starmade
  • 2 years ago

It certainly doesn’t look like my Plum Perfect either. Much closer resemblance to my WS2000, though I am not convinced it’s that one either.

The colouring and leaves remind me of Falstaff. Mine ws killed to the ground this year and I dont have pics of it any longer to compare, but maybe later after it sends up more canes and blooms. Its really late compared to everything else.

You may want to post this in the Antique Rose forum also. The flower form reminds me of Madame Dubost and Madame Isaac Pereire, both are of the bourbon rose class. This could be a hybrid of old roses. But, yes, this also reminds me of some David Austin roses.

    What about Young Lycidas?

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked erasmus_gw
  • 2 years ago

Not Young Lycidas, I think. I've grown one for years, and it's never looked like the mystery rose. Diane

Alfie (North London, UK) thanked Diane Brakefield
  • 2 years ago

Diane, your Young Lycidas is to die for. I've heard some negatives about its growth habit, but with flowers like that who would even care? To me this is the most delicious reddish/purple color of all the Austin roses, and the one I'd be the most interested in growing again. I had this rose once but lost it in the great squirrel debacle before it had put on too much growth.

Thank you so much Ingrid. I think you would like YL's growth habit, which is quite relaxed and sort of like old garden roses' growth patterns. YL leans some on his neighbors, particularly Colette, and sometimes even Angel Face and Julia Child. YL is a good bloomer, too. If things go well in your garden with good old used kitty littler, you should take another chance on YL. I lost my first YL to gophers a number of years ago during winter. He's a definitely worth a second chance. Diane

Since you are based in UK, it looks like the version of Purple Lodge that they sell in Europe (we in the US seem to have a somewhat different looking rose called Purple Lodge).

Thanks people. lovely pictures diana. It does look a lot like Purple Lodge BenT but I can’t find any variation of it sold in the UK currently.

What do people think about the possibility of it being Timeless Purple?

I feel out of place commenting on Timeless Purple since I have not grown it and have not seen it in person, but maybe this photo will help. This photo is from Help Me Find (Timeless Purple is NOA38121, bottom right) and shows leaf and partial stem form (it looks rather thorny).

This is the direct link to this specific photo: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.391771

This photo may also help: https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.319086, but I was not able to find a better quality image

Help Me Find says Timeless Purple has arching growth. What is the growth habit of your beautiful mystery rose?

FWIW, I think the photo of Purple Lodge that BenT shared looks nearly identical to yours. This is the Help Me Find for Purple Lodge: https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.51199.1&tab=1 Also, the Purplelicious that Elena posted is another name for Purple Lodge.

Even just looking at the photos, I agree with his assessment that the USA version looks very different from the European version.

Could be Theirry Marx or Japanese rose, Cartonnage. Very much like Cartonnage leaves & fushia to purple colors!

Could you give us a side photo of rose bloom shape? How big is bloom diameter? Fragrance type? Close up photos of leaves? How tall us bush? How often blooms? Does it look like a floribubda ir HT? Bushy or tall?

It would have helped if Alfie had the UK location in his title. So many people ask questions without telling their location. Thank you Marlorena.

@Marlorena - thanks for the ID! It definitely looks like Timeless Purple to me.

Sheila yes that would help you’re right. I will change my name to include my location.

Thanks to all for your help, comments and photos. It has been an interesting thread to follow. Seen some amazing purple roses!
