Wall Topper Privacy…

last modified: 3 years ago

We have a 7’ garden wall (stucco) and are unable to raise it to 8’ due to the foundation not supporting any more blocks beyond 7’.

I’ve been thinking about wall toppers to add even more height, not only for privacy, but so I can grow vines that will need support above the wall.

Next door neighbor’s bedroom window overlooks our garden. Only a bushy vine will block their window from view.

Any recommendations?

I was thinking of a cast iron garden fencing panel to attach to the wall, or a wood lattice. The cast iron may be too heavy.

Our style is English/French country.

Edit: Pics below, examples of possible toppers. wood fence we would reduce to wall topper height.

My husband is a hobbyist woodworker, so can make almost anything from wood.

Is that a photo of your fence? It doesn’t look like stucco.

Sorry Jackowskib, i should’ve been more clear. The two photos are options I found as wall toppers. The fence we would obviously reduce the size. Not perfect options, but i can’t think of anything else.

Patricia - wish I could share pics, but we’ve got various people working on our garden right now and our stucco guy started evening out our wall and redoing the stucco yesterday. I can share a pic when he’s done. It’s a soft grey tinted stucco, he‘s doing a smooth finish.

Is it possible to plant a tree strategically to block the neighbors window?

Stucco walls are very nice and don't get any dirtier than any other type of fence. I live where there are stucco walls around plenty of very high end homes. Plants can easily be trained to climb up stucco walls with trellises or small nails/wires applied for the purpose. My BFF has smooth stucco walls around a gorgeous courtyard with fruit trees espaliered on the walls. It is so beautiful and offers citrus fruits a few steps from her kitchen, so I think there are a lot of uses for stucco walls.

I'd pick the plant first, then pick the support needed.

Will the plant cover the entire stucco wall--will the "topper" go the entire length? (Don't cover the entire wall! ~signed, A Stucco Wall Fan.)

I thought everyone knew what a stucco wall looks like. How tall would the topper have to be ?

Mrs S - we have a large lemon tree in far left corner (with seating under it) and an orange tree in far right corner.

The plan is to have rectangular patch of grass in centre of garden and wrap around gravel path, around the outer edge of garden. Between the two trees we’re putting a bench against wall. its not possible to plant a large tree in between. it will look too crowded. maybe a lollipop tree that grows up wall?

On right side wall there is nothing. I was thinking of a vine, like a bougainvillea maybe.

Patricia - the original walls are cinderblock, so the only options were stucco or wall cladding. i wanted wall cladding, but it’s not in our budget, as funds are being used for pavers at front of house and a custom arched arbor. So stucco it was. People use pins on the wall to help vines climb.

The stucco has a limestone mix and natural coloring which looks pretty with the natural light, so we will seal it and won’t need to paint it.

Main colors are grey and green, with pops of color here and there.

Woodrose - I agree. All walls here in AZ have the *blah* cinderblock, or a pretty stucco/limestone finish. No other options here, unless you have 10 acres somewhere and do fencing and natural borders with trees.

Wall is 7’. For balance I guess 2‘-3’ topper or it could look silly. But any vines that grow wild will add natural height.

Fori - I think a bougainvillea on the right side maybe, at least half way across wall. Agree. Don’t want to hide all of the wall :)

Dig Doug - we’re at a 9. i do like the idea of a lollipop trunk and then growth up near the top of the wall, so we don’t cover the wall too much.

Bougainvillea? Sorry...I'm having pruning flashbacks. 😬 So much blood. Doug's suggestion of Lady Banks rose is so much less evil. Or any rose...but LB is pretty much thornless.

I like the wooden X, scaled down of course. Preferably with the roses pictured. Teehee.

We need pictures of your house to know what to recommend that is appropriate. Stucco is stucco but is your house modern? Spanish? Colonial? The extra height could be gained a myriad of ways but the iron filigree you posted would look silly with my modern ranch but could look great on a Georgian.
