The season is slowing starting

It's been hot and terribly dry here. Bob is watering 24/7. Luckily, Bob put in a second well several years ago and we have good water supply where we live.

The named varieties are slowly getting started.

Hillside Bright and Early is one of Dave Mussar's series of early bloomers--blooming about the time of Stella.

Vader's Choice has very black scapes--probably the blackest in the garden.

Night Whispers was purchases in a pot this year.

Most of the seedlings blooming now are those that were planted in 2022. They are always anxious to bloom the first time. Here is the first one that hasn't been brown or brick red. It is Little Strawberry Shortcake X Out of Balance.

We have a mature row of pine tress as a windbreak. There's a little pathway into an open area that we call the secret garden. We planted four martagon lilies in there. They are blooming now. They are my favorite lilies.

I liked the bright color on this lily so much I bought it twice (by accident).

Here is a raised planter that I threw together. I hope I can keep the weeds out of it.

Your daylilies are nice, but the lillies are spectacular. I would love to chill awhile in your secret garden. Your planter is just beautiful. I've had to start watering here too, and unfortunately I didn't start soon enough. The bracts on the scapes are turning brown and the foliage has already started to look ratty.

Now I would love to walk through that secret garden! How beautiful those lilies are. And that raided bed///I need to learn to "through together like that, it is a beautiful thing with all the plants, Nancy. I like the Strawberry Shortcake seedling.

Love reading about your secret garden. Sounds wonderful. No rain in sight here for the coming week so will be pulling out the hoses again tomorrow.

The secret garden is a work in progress. Right now it has only the 4 martagons in it. It can get really dry with all those mature pine trees sucking up the moisture (which the martagons don't like), but we keep them watered and they have bloomed for us for three years now. I eventually want to add some more colors.

The garden needs a lot of work. It has downed pine branches and some weeds, but the pine needles that are dropped by the trees keep it relatively free of weeds. You do have to watch out for poison ivy though. Bob is terribly allergic to it so we keep a spray bottle of round-up in the gator at all time.

I love the look of the martagon lilies. And I love the idea of the secret garden. I can relate to the poison ivy allergy-not a good allergy for gardeners!

I don't think I have ever seen scapes as dark as Vader's Choice has. The Martagon Lilies are lovely!

My grandparents who lived next door had orange martagon lilies like the speckled orange one in the first lily pic. Brings back childhood memories. I love the pic of the last one, the bright colored one. Great color.
