Paint the ceiling a bright white. It looks like you have incandescent lighting which is throwing a yellow-y cast to everything. I'd consider getting additional cable LED lighting to hang between two sets of beams and changing out the chandelier bulbs to LED converted ones that will work in your fixture.

You may need more light closer to the floor where people are. I don't think it's a big deal if the ceiling is dim. It's hard to light a high-ceilinged room with lights up high. You need end tables with lamps and/or floor lamps. Can you get under this floor to install floor outlets? Before doing this make sure you have the right arrangement of your furniture. If you post a floorplan and the dimensions of the furniture you have (or tell us if you will be buying new) this is a good place to get advice on your furniture placement. The commenters will also need to know if there will be a TV in this room.

How many cross beams do you have in the room?

LED tape lighting on the surface of each horizontal beam will shine up to the ceiling, lighting the whole room to accent the ceiling and brighten the whole room.

Have you spoken to a lighting consultant? these LED tapes are easy to DIY, you need to buy them from a electrical distributor.

This room needs additional lighting fixtures added to it - both ceiling as well as wall lighting and floor lamps.
