Does This Root Belong to a Different Remote Tree?

We are excavating to build a foundation for a heavy pot and found a tree root in the middle of the excavation area. The root either belongs to a Mimosa tree next to the root, or alternately to a very large established Blue Cedar tree that is about 50 feet from the location. Based on the angle of this root, it appears to come straight from the distant Blue Cedar. Can anyone tell from close inspection of this root whether it belongs to a Mimosa or to a Blue Cedar?

If the root belongs to the Mimosa, which is already in poor health, probably we struggle to preserve the root. If the root belongs to the Blue Cedar, it would be safe to cut the root out.
