I always enjoy seeing the seedlings. They really are quite stunning. Darn deer are such pests then to have the aphids. Yikes.

Oh no, don't you just hate those deer. I am so sorry that they struck again. We usually don't spray for thrips but we have seen some damage. A favorite seedling has opened two flowers, both destroyed by the thrips, I assume. We were so anxious to see it too.

Lonesome Jaguar is beautiful. We finally bought it but ours hasn't bloomed yet. Mike Derrow is one of our favorite hybridizers. His daylilies do so well here. The seedlings are lovely. If the deer have to eat something, I would prefer they eat something other than the seedlings.

No deer here, thank goodness, the rabbits have been awful in my gardens. They are working on my heuchera and smaller hosta, so disappointing. Its been so dry here that I am worried about my daylily blooms this season. May only brought 1/2” of rain and health problems kept me from watering. I am feeling much better and trying to catch up…..hope it helps.

Oh, Debra, I sympathize with you on the deer. Of course all my damage was on my named daylilies. Yours was worse being that they ate your seedlings. Even though I have had no rain in a while I still am spraying every week or two or throwing some granule repellent around the edges. We rarely drive up our driveway at night without seeing two or three scoping the yard.

Lonesome Jaguar has quite the edge! So pretty. Sensational Heart has great color. I have looked at Browns Ferry Debutante and thought about adding it. It looks like a pretty pink.

I too wonder about BF Debutante. Would like more reports on that one. Three weeks is a long time before reapplying repellent. I apply at least twice a week on those exposed. Most of mine are fenced in. Mystical Intuition took a nice picture, but of course, it ends up being a Petit. Best clump pic I've seen of Wonder of It All--I mean, every bloom perfect.

Mantis - I would go crazy if I had to apply deterrent twice a week. All of my daylilies are exposed, and even last night I only got deterrent on about half of them. We've only had light rain since I first applied it, and I have put down granules as well since then in a few places. I didn't put my Bounce strips out this year. They work well when it does rain since they become smellier when wet. I'm putting those on the scapes of seedlings that have not yet bloomed.

Browns Ferry Debutante is a couple inches shorter than last year and has less buds (10-11 this year maybe 15 last year). It doubled in fans since I got it last year, and it holds its color well when temps are above 90.

It's too bad the Petits don't fare better for you. I really think Petit's edged and patterned daylilies were the best ever created.

Sherry - I had problems with rabbits earlier too. Way back in April I applied a product called Rabbit and Groundhog Out since new foliage and new scapes were being eaten. It worked pretty well. I wish I hadn't used all my Deer Out last year. It had an oil in it that allows to last thorugh three or four rains. It's much more effective than Repels All and Deer Fence, the other products I've used. It's really dry here, and I've been watering for the past few days. Let's hope we both get some rain soon!

Kate - It sounds like you apply the deterrent more frequently than I do. Sensational Heart has fantastic color in the morning, but it starts to fade pretty early in the afternoon. Browns Ferry Debutante is a good one - read what I told Mantis about it. Lonesome Jaguar - and all of Mike Derrow's plants - are excellent.

If you get a good pump sprayer, you can spray huge swaths in a short time. My biggest concern about Brown's Ferry Debutante is hardiness. It has Cerise Masterpiece in its parentage--not hardy here.

Mantis - I don't know if BFD would be hardy for you or not. It's a good one for my zone.

Debra, my gardens are spread out all my lawn acreage. I tend to cheat as I drive my golf cart around and spray from it! The deer are only interested in the buds right now so I try to do a perimeter spray and then spray the budded ones. I also broadcast granules every two weeks. It is a never ending battle for me.

Kate - It sounds like you and Mantis have spraying down to an art. I cut up Bounce dryer sheets into strips last night and tied those around buds of new seedlings that have not yet bloomed. That's helped protect my buds in the past. And the good thing about those is they get smellier when wet. So dew, watering and rain make those more effective. I was talking to some neighbors walking their dogs this morning who wanted to know why I tied ribbons on some of the daylilies. When I told them the reason, both said they had seen deer on the surrounding streets pretty frequently in the last two weeks. So I will have spray and put out granule and Milorganite more frequently. I used to spray with Gain Fabric Softener, but the company has changed the formula and I'm afraid to use it on the plants now.
