Tall spaces require larger items. Everything you have is too small for the scale of the room. Longer console table on the wall where short one is now. Large art. Taller end tables with larger lamps. Take wreaths down and leave that area empty. Work decor at room height. Shelves are cluttered. Take desk lamps off cabinets. I would put 1 piece on each shelf. Colorful pillows. Look at local galleries for art. Or try minted.com

I agree with jck910. Two shelves over consoles that aren't real built-ins look insubtantial, while at the same time the shelves look cluttered. Real built-ins with different molding over the fireplace (or clad the fireplace section with stone) would look more intentional and cohesive. If built-ins aren't in the budget, see if you can find consoles or bookshelves that fit the openings better. On the opposite wall you need art - one very large piece or an arrangement of several pieces.

I think I'd be tempted to put doors or curtains over the two openingsby the fireplace and use it as storage. Can your sectional be reconfigured? If not, I think another matching coffee table ottoman to fit the space would look good. A larger sideboard with a large piece of art would look nice on the other side of the fireplace or just a large tapestry. If you use the two sides of the fireplace for storage you can rotate your decorative items.

I'm a bit late for the discussion, but I think art is absolutely the solution here. Since the scale is so large you'd probably want to make a wise investment and have it be something that really means somthing for you and your family. Love to chat more if you're interested!

Plants do a lot to add warmth. I would invest in some sizable tree-type plants. A lemon, or fig or palm of some sort. Something that can grow to about ten feet would be good!

Yes, I’m late as well but all great ideas and I hope we get some updates! I would board and batten the large blank wall. The fireplace wall could be painted and add some wood finishes maybe on cabinetry as in the photo someone else posted. Rearrange the couch maybe turning it and definitely put up wood blinds getting rid of curtains. And plants absolutely always help and there’s also really good artificial plants! Good luck!

Setting a framed work of art leaning on the middle shelf on each side would fill space without adding clutter. They could coordinate or not, but they should be relatively the same size.

Is the wall where the blanket ladder is long enough for the couch? If so, I would move the couch there, away from the windows, facing the tv. If needed I would remove the smaller part of the sectional. Then one large piece of art over the couch. I agree with Jck910 that you should take down the wreaths and larger items needed overall. Maybe you could remove everything on each side of the fireplace and put a very tall plant/tree on each side.

Paint that whole fireplace wall a great color and get some coordinating wall art. big pieces on those big walls. Keep the walls behind the shelves white. get rid of all of those little things and replace them with nicer. larger. cleaner pieces as recommended above, Add big colorful pillows.

A large statement chandelier helps pull the ceiling down.

The window coverings pictured here look like those pleated shades that disappear when up. That would be a great window covering solution, especially if you could tie your upper and lower windows together with trim work.

As mentioned in the comments, large scale and arrangement of furniture is key, anchoring the gathering space with a large soft rug. Any art or mirror or greenery need to be scaled to the space it occupies.

Many good ideas here! For warmth consider that cool, white curtain panels don’t add much; perhaps try a natural linen color? That might be too close to the sectional, so maybe choose an actual color for drapes. Large rooms with high ceilings are not easy to “warm up”, and it might cost you some more $$. The throw pillows also don’t add much, imo…try larger ones with color. And definitely a larger, rectangular ottoman!

late to this discussion as well but I will say that I am struggling with the curtain situation and how it divides your room between upper and lower. I like the two different solutions that Deborah posted here. Either matching fabric shades or the very dramatic two-story drapes. It would depend on the ultimate look you were going for.

You definitely need to add color to achieve “cozy”.

Can you replace the carpet with hardwood floors, than add a large colorful rug?
