Also, be careful about box spring height. When we ordered twin beds from a local place here in Florida, I sat the bed and said this is the one! When they were delivered, they were too high.

This was during pandemic. I was tired of arguing, so we swapped the box spring out forv$100 each. Very unfair.

My advice: this can be your himewarminf gift!

My DS and DIL bought a Tuft & Needle 6 years ago. They just replaced it, they don't last long but they liked it until it was used up. They are available on A. They have now replaced it with Awara. More money but a better mattress and has some other things that appeal to them like a really long test period and if you return it they don't landfill them.

The NYT Wirecutter did a review on recommended cheap mattresses on May 26, picking their top choices in queen size under $500.

Hopefully you can access it without the paywall but if not, the top choice was Zinus Green Tea Cooling Twirl Memory Foam hybrid which is available on Amazon for $333.

Running, The Strategist suggested the same one. I personally don't like memory foam but I'm a picky old lady. They can get it delivered right to their new place.

For a budget option, I like IKEA mattresses on a slat frame.

Two years ago DS and his GF bought a Zinus platform bed and mattress from the Big A and seem happy with their choice. I think they used Wirecutter as a guide.

The mattresses from Ikea come rolled up. I have this one at the beach in firm but there are more choices. Not for a mattress, but if she needs anything, I'd suggest trying Buy Nothing. I think everyone in our demographic is trying to get rid of stuff. Our Buy Nothing site includes people posting wishlists of things they need and it work pretty well!

Teeda…I hear you! DD and her BF are 22. He is from far away, and apparently living at home across the country from each other is out of the question. Fortunately he fell in love with New England and wanted to move here, vs her moving out to his home state. We also adore the BF but I really would have preferred seeing her live with friends and live the single life for a while…but no one actually asked for my opinion. Really no complaints though…could be much worse!

I did an inventory today of all the stuff I can give them from home and our beach cottage…I am thinking they are lucky I’m a quasi-hoarder! Full set of dishes, silverware, glassware, comforter, bureau, nightstands, two end tables, a coffee table, a couple kitchen chairs…

Have you considered an air mattress bed, very inexpensive. When I koved to the cabin, I used one for a year, no complaints. I gave it away when i moved my bed from home.

We had to furnish my son's college bedroom from afar so we opted to get this IKEA mattress since it comes shrinkwrapped and rolled up so easy to transport.

He loves that mattress more than his bed at home so he brought it home from college when he graduated. In fact, we currently have a college athlete living with us this summer (he just placed 6th in his sport at the NCAA Track and Field championships yesterday!) He is so tall he doesn't fit on our guest bed so he normally sleeps on a very uncomfortable sofa bed. We put our son's IKEA mattress on the sofa bed frame for the time being - our guest said it is very comfortable which I am glad b/c he needs to be well rested.

We bought this Zinus bedframe from A.....N since that could be shipped. It actually comes in two pieces that fold in half, so when our son moved out of his collefe house a few weeks ago, it was easy to fold up and put in our SUV. Note, you may be able to find one on FB Marketplace - we bought the same frame much cheaper from a medical student when our daughter moved off campus at her college. Suggest looking there first for the frames since they are easy to transport,

Congratulations on your new chapter Sue. No recommendations on a cheap mattress, but my son does like his Zinnus platform bedframe very much after several years. He got a higher one so he had more space underneath for storage.

I have a Zinus 12" memory foam from A on my office daybed. I prefer it over the natural latex with wool cover that cost 10x more in our bedroom (sometimes have to escape snoring hubs).

HOWEVER! I just went down a rabbit hole last week when ordering a new mattress -- apparently all mattresses must have a flame retardant component and fiberglass is very common. Did not know that and honestly I preferred my blissful ignorance. Sure enough my Zinus has 30% fiberglass. It was extremely difficult to get straightforward answers on so many models. I settled for a Brooklyn Bedding signature hybrid at a decent price, was assured there is no fiberglass. Hasn't yet arrived so I can't speak to quality or comfort but it was pretty inexpensive.

All that to say that it's at least good to have fiber content on the radar when shopping around. Some of the cheaper mattresses on A do say they are fiberglass free.

Your DD just missed Memorial Day sales for most mattresses. If she can wait 2-3 weeks, there may be better prices for the 4th of July. But many mattress makers have discounts off the listed retail price under an ever changing list of named sales. The mattress price might be the same with pillows, sheets or foundations being the part that varies.

The least expensive mattresses are thin coil ones meant primarily for young children and all foam mattresses delivered in a box. Costco typically carries one or two in warehouses with more available online and those can be delivered so she doesn't have to move it. We are not too fond of pure foam mattresses (don't like that wet sand/quicksand feeling) and kept going back to hybrids that have a layer of springs and a layer(s) of foam. We wound up with a Leesa ordered from Costco after spending 6 months trying to get a mattress we were happy with through "regular" channels. I like the Leesa enough that I had my sister try it when I discovered she needed something new. She now has one too. Leesa has great customer service.

One word of caution: Mattress makers and sellers apparently are still working through finding mattresses that were probably caught up in the shipping log jam at the start of the pandemic and the fallout since. We had deliveries of mattresses that had been in the boxes over a year and up to three years. They don't open fully and will never be as comfortable as they were meant to be when that happens. Check the manufacturer's tag to verify how long it was in the box. From what 2 manufacturers told us, don't accept one that has been in the box more than 2-3 months max. The Leesa mattress we got was less than a week. Loved that.

The Leesa is made to order -- the hybrids are made by Leggett and Platt and the ones ordered from Costco apparently have faster shipping -- we ordered my sister's on 5/31 and she got delivery on 6/3. I liked the fact that we would have Costco to work with if needed after all the problems we had, but we haven't had to for either mattress. We looked at mattresses that were over $10,000 and got one we are happy with for a fraction of that. Leesa has less expensive non-hybrids on their website too and seems to always have a sale that includes 2 free pillows.

One final tip -- it's tempting to cut through the plastic the mattress is rolled up in, but unrolling it will get you to the flat envelope it is sucked up in and where you can clearly see where the cover is so it isn't cut. Dreamcloud, Nectar, Wink, Avocado -- so many others I saw online, but we were able to try the Leesa at a Pottery Barn store (West Elm may also have them). If this hadn't worked, after a good cry, I would have likely tried Dreamcloud or a latex hybrid I saw advertised. Good luck to her, on the mattress, the move and a new chapter.

ETA: Brooklyn Bedding was another I read about, but was not able to try. I got gun shy about not being able to try something before ordering after returning or refusing over a dozen mattresses.
