Mop head hydrangea prune?

last modified: 3 years ago

Hi. We have 3 huge mop head hydrangeas. We didn't know you weren't supposed to prune these plants. We did the year before last. No blooms. We figured out what we did. Last year, we didn't prune. This year we have lots of new growth. Only 2 blooms, both on old growth. However, there are lots of stems from last year that hasn't put out any foliage. Looks like tall sticks sticking out of plants. Do I continue to leave those and hope they have growth? Or if it was going to happen, it should have by now and I need to remove these? Thanks
We are in zone 8b, but we did have colder than normal temps for one week in Dec and a late spring freeze. :(
