Our nights have been so cool that the daylilies have not been opening well so there were few to photograph today.

Lava Flow is finally open. It used to be the first, but now it has been beaten by several others--Buddy's Betsy, Kiss of Paradise, By the Golden Rule and several others. It will, however, always be in our garden because of its color and its earliness. Apparently, it is also a cold morning opener. Buddy's Betsy and Kiss of Paradise have not looked good enough to warrant a photo.

Gryphon Carl Linnaeus does not look like it was affected by the weather. It is a great grower. We have observed that daylilies with some sort of fulva in their immediate background seem to be tougher than the average daylily. The Gryphon series comes from Gil Stelter in Canada and they all have a fulva variety as parent or grand or great-grand parent.

This is a small flowered NOID. It will leave the garden next season at the herb fair.

All the rest are seedlings with their first blooms. No brown or stippled dips this time--just tets.

I was hoping this seedling would be rounder like its pod parent. It is Candy Bandit X Ultimate Design. We don't know if Ultimate Design is hardy so it overwinters in the greenhouse. It does have a nice flower and hoped crossing it with Candy Bandit would yield something that is hardy. Candy Bandit is a Culver from Canada.

I love the EPxEL seedling. Such a rich color. I do like LAVA FLOW, but I got rid of mine because it was branched like a telephone pole and the bud count was in the single digits.

I like Buddy's Betsy. I bet your cooler weather makes the hot colors sizzle - if they open. ........ I also like the deep burgundy seedling. That's a promising one.......And the little warm yellow Noid is a pretty one in your picture. Someone will appreciate it I'm sure........Maryl

Bright sun after very cool night--not a good combination for blooms. I do hear, though, that we may have a soaking rain beginning tomorrow. Next week, cool nights later. One hardly wishes for the hot weather that brings warmer nights, but that's what the daylilies like. This past week was great weather for enjoying the outdoors, but alas, most of my time was spent dragging hoses.

Lava Flow was always one of my first to open as well. Alas, the late freeze apparently caught it too. Not a single scape. The Ebony Pools seedling has a rich color.

Lava Flow is always early and has lots of impact. The red eyed seedling is my favorite.

Wow, Kate didn't have a single scape on Lava Flow! One can't overestimate the damage that late freezes can do. It will be interesting to see what the Eggplant L seedling looks like when weather is friendlier (to daylilies at least).
