UPDATE - Staircase Railing Makeover

last modified: 3 years ago

UPDATE: We are remodeling our Great room and have decided to do something about the stairs since they are a main feature. Although they've grown on me and I really don't notice them one way or another, my husband and I have discussed, if we're already having contractors in our home and dust flying everywhere, might as well tackle this project now rather than repeat a similar process a few years down the line. We originally were considering simply painting the railing and newel posts, but now have pivoted to replacing them with iron spindles, including a single or double square feature (see example pics below and ORIGINAL/CURRENT photos further down below). Realizing this will bring us back to an increase in our budget, I'd like to reconsider pursuing the horizontal rails I've loved for a long time.

We live in Nashville in a pretty traditional brick 3-story home. I'd love to hear progressive ideas as well as more traditional ideas about how to update the stairs, and we're all-in now so don't worry too much about the budget. Thanks!

(*Note- I sincerely appreciate the warnings about kids climbing horizontal railings. Currently, we don't have kids, don't plan to have kids, and will have to be conscious about visitors with kids, but it's not going to make that my main concern. I did look up how to install clear plexiglass if kids come into our future!)

Original post: We want to update our staircase by changing the newel posts and potentially staining them and the railing darker. As you can see, we have a catwalk staircase so it is somewhat of a feature from our entrance as well as our grand room/living room. Trying to stay on a budget but NOT the best DIYers. Thanks for the help.
