I have owned SxS and FD fridges and much prefer a FD model. I really dislike those narrow freezers.

Are you limited to the 42" space? SZ now has a 48" FD model and I would have bought that when we built 2 years ago, but it was not available at that time. The 48" size is a much more common size, even with other brands.

Yes, I have limited space. I have a KitchenAid 42” built-in that’s gone caput so I need to look for another 42”. I don’t have a big family so I think the 42” would suffice. Thank you for your reply!

We love our SZ 42” FD! 7 1/2 years old. No issues. Love the layout.

Friends have the SXS. Hate having to bend so low, to get things from the lower shelves of the fridge, which is used much more often than the freezer, The narrowness of the freezer, and the need to bend low, is a deal breaker for me.

I think it depends on your personal preference. I have had both and FD doesnt work for me. Out of sight, out of mind. The FD freezer allows me to bury food that is just that, buried with freezer burn. FYI I just had a SZ installed today (side by side) and i ordered it in early May 2022. From what I have heard, FD models are taking longer because they are having difficulty getting 42/48” glass shelves. Amazing products which ever model you choose.

I've had both - 42" built-in SxS and now a 36" full depth FD in a different home. I love the spaciousness of the fridge section in the FD. I despise the freezer drawer. While the freezer section of a SxS is narrow, it's so much easier to see what's in it and get it out without unloading the whole freezer drawer. I have a 36" SZ at a different home with freezer drawer. That one is easier to find things in but it's counter depth and small. I have a second 36" SxS in my garage for additional space and really like that freezer where I can see everything at a glance. All that said if I have to buy another fridge I'd probably choose FD over SxS.

We have the 42" SZ SxS. The freezer is wide enough to fit a Digiorno pizza box. :) My parents have a french door fridge, and I don't like how their freezer is so low, and I feel it's difficult to find things in there. We got the version of the SZ without a water dispenser so there is more space on the inside. We ordered it in Oct. 21 and received it in Nov. 22.
