Roo. So sorry to hear about BH and his problem, of course I feel terrible for him, but worse for you :(
You will need another retreat for sure. Sigh.
Lucky sister and daughter can help out before surgery, hope like heck they can help out a bit afterwards as well. Whatever you do, don't give him a bell to call you with. My aunt did that for my uncle a while back, never had to run around so much before, for no good reason. Amazing what they can come up with for excuses to keep you with them or get them ridiculous, unnecessary items. I know it's terribly dull for him to lay around, but it makes them peevish and needy too and guess who gets the brunt of it. Are you still having the family to visit soon? I hope so, it may be extra work for you, but it's also some other people to listen and entertain BH, maybe to give you a mental break too. I don'tknow how old you are, but is there some in house help that is provided under national health insurance? Someone who stops in to give a hand with care or help? And maybe give BH a different ear to bend? :)
I'm glad you're still posting here, it's good to see you.
Maybe computer went on strike because you weren't houzzing while on retreat, lol
When you've figured out the new one, i still want to see some of your photos.
    Have a good night

Thanks Michele. That is so funny you saying about the bell. When my mother had her accident and had to go to a nursing home while she recovered, the first home she went to wasn't suitable and after 3 days DD just pulled her out without any warning and took her home with her while we found a new place for her. Anyway that was before we knew about mum's dementia and when I decided I would care for her here. DD thought she was doing the right thing and gave her a bell, she rang it every 5 mins. When DD brought her to me, her first words were do NOT give her a @#@$%#$ bell. He is going to have to learn how to use the crutches, I know they are very tiring but he will need to exercise a bit to keep his body a bit active.

His sister has offered to take him from time to time to give us a break and also I don't want DD taking time off work, she can't afford to go without the money at the moment and there is always something happening with her kids. I know sister is only doing it out of sense of "family" so will see whether anything eventuates or not.

As Aged Pensioners we are eligible for some assistance, especially with transport although it isn't very user friendly but I'm also not sure yet how much assistance the Travel Insurance Company will give. I don't quite know the full extent of rehab he will need so there is a chance he will spend time there and maybe I can have someone come here to work on him instead of trying to run him around everywhere. They are paying to upgrade him to Business Class on the flight and have organised wheelchairs at the airports and a limo to get home from the airport.

The Germans will be coming out for Christmas and DD will stay for 6 weeks so seeing this happened on her watch I guess we can guilt her into some care. At least she will have full use of his car.

I have a feeling my kitchen renovations won't be happening in a hurry next year. Don't know if that is a good or a bad thing.

Probably a good thing, you've certainly got a lot on your plate at the moment. Might be a good thing.
You may discover a previously unthought of item or arrangement to make the whole space better, and all because you had to wait and had the opportunity to rethink things. Sometimes things fall into place, because of the unexpected, and it becomes a welcome surprise. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the case for you.
I certainly hope that the sister in law, whether she feels it's her duty or because she's decided to be kindhearted, gives you a break once in a while. Better for all involved if some of the time is shared and things can be broken up and enlivened. For all of you. :)
And you can always come on here and give a good &@%£*€>?!!!&@#% every now and again. Sometimes it's nice to be able to vent to someone who's purely on your side. :)

Happy Friday, I hope it's a good one for all of you.

Ms Roo -- omgosh... I'm sorry... the Achilles tear is pretty serious, and you two are in for a long haul while it heals. It's a slow recovery for sure and it's not going to be a fun road. We are here for you anytime you want to vent, and I'm sure that you will want to vent!

STK -- take it easy today and have a great weekend!

Angela -- Ollds isn't going anywhere, don't you worry! I hope that you're doing okay, I've been thinking about you the last few days. Hang in there...

Michele & Jayme -- good morning!

Morning kimdee, don't forget to get out of the house for a stretch and some fresh air. :)
I went into living room, discovered two cobwebs, both about 15' long, stretching around the room. Haven't even started cleaning at that end of house. And it will have to wait until next week, I'm going back to beach this evening. Suck up all the best of the weather while we can. Can't wait to go for a long, long bike ride down there, less traffic by the ocean now, I hope. Plus less people on the beach, but the water is perfect temp. Just hard to shove it all into two days, plus a tidy up, and get home again. I'm not really complaining, I'm very lucky to have the option to go, just want it to last a bit longer. 3 day weekends anyone?
I really am dreading fall/winter... it has been such a short, rainy summer... been hot all week of course, since I couldn't play golf this week and wouldn't you know that the weather for the weekend isn't looking that great.

Cleaned my house all day yesterday, only thing left is to mop the floors. Cobwebs, ugh... my deck is always covered in them, probably because of the lake out back... i guess it's good in a way, spiders eat mosquitos, etc, but I have to go out and knock the webs down every now and then because they're everywhere. Hate them.

I think my project for today might be to finally get the hose reel I bought hung up on the house so I can put the garden hose away. Maybe I'll tackle that today.

Roo & Mforr...Did I mention I work with patients who often have dementia & also a call light?
Oh my, jayme, you poor thing, running back and forth all shift long. That's tough. It's necessary but OMG, there's an abuse of a good thing just begging to happen. :)
    Nurses work hard, bless them!
I do believe dementia and anxiety often go hand in hand. In fact, most of the time they do. Many dementia patients get anxious related to their perception of what is happening. It is sad, and anxiety meds help sometimes. But we often have family members who do not want their loved one medicated. Then they go home and the patient is up all night and all day and suffers. I feel sad for those people, try to do what I can to help.
Jayme - I find the key is education. The more you can inform the family as to what the patient is experiencing, the more likely they are to agree. Mind you, I work in an emergency setting and often don't see the long term effects if any treatments I do.

    Hats off to you lady!

Well, I found my way through the dry ice fog, finally!!!!! Incase any of you are wondering, Michele loves Halloween. Anyone who bakes butcher knife cupcakes, needs to be questioned hahaha. Yes, It's light out and not a usual time for me to be here. Just killing time, waiting for hubby to finish up his nap. Were heading to the lake later this afternoon to check on the progress then out for supper. Thought I should check in here and see what's shakin :)

But if we're doing it, by golly, we're going to do it right, and doing it right is doing it scary, really scary.

Jayme- I did my research on non med treatments for dementia this past semester. Music therapy and animal therapy is picking up speed and I hope we see more. That will be what I push at the VA.

    Cocktails over at Margaret B's
yes, his share was $67,500. sweet. there are some fabulous young rider/horse combos now so the future of show jumping is very exciting.

roo, sorry about hubby. a friends husband was laid up and didn't feel up to reading much. i lent him several audio books, including unabridged detective series. a great way to pass time and give them a break from each other.

angela, i was surprised by the regional break offs as well. i'm much more interested in global discussions than small sectors.

michele, glad you'rea able to get back to the beach for the weekend. a buit like weaning off it for the season rather than going cold turkey!

STK, hope the doctor gives you the news you're hoping for. you're too vital for such problems.

well the guest bath tile was grouted today. tub surround and floor. the toilet goes in monday.minor sheetrock. we drilled the glass bowl for the sink and yeah, it worked. so the sink and faucet will go in.painting last.
then my GC is away for a few days before starting owners suite bath. i've pretty much decided to replace the garden tub with a large, curbless shower.
anybody have a steam shower? words of wisdom?
the rooms floor will be heated. a seperate water heater for this bath(maybe tankless). dbl vanity.seperate water closet won't change.
    Anyone up.
Well I am of course, but I assume you are making zzzzzzzs by now. We have our first fire of the season just across the valley from us and the choppers water bombing, while necessary, get hard to take after a while. DD decided not to come today, the kids have too much homework so that has taken the pressure off a bit.

Michele, I have pretty much organised my new kitchen, courtesy of Houzz of course, I have found some great ideas here and there isn't much I can vary in it. Just swapping the wall oven and a fridge, expanding the pantry and relocating the microwave. All cupboards will be drawers or sliding shelves - everything will be OLLD friendly. I will lose a good storage cupboard with extending the pantry, but the pantry will give me extra bench space and include a lot of other things that will free up space and the drawers instead of shelves will give me a lot more usable storage as well. THEN I have to get BH to clean out half his rubbish as well.

Goodness, Jayme, I didn't think of dementia patients with call buttons, that really would be a nightmare, you just wouldn't know what to act on and what to ignore. Mum's problem was she constantly felt she had to go to the loo and had me taking her every 5 mins, adamant it was hours since she had been. I ended up putting her in pads at night as I was not getting any sleep, we had a huge fight over it, but then she still kept calling me half the night because the pad was wet!!! Not once did she wet the pad or the bed.

Working things out slowly here, so here are some of the great photos I can get with my camera when I put it in the Art mode. The first one is the actual photo and the rest are some of the 17 images the camera produces of that photo.
OK taking forever to work - try again
great photo effects. which camera did you buy? is this one you'd recommend now that you've had time to play with it?
    Roo- those look really good.
Don't you love that you have the option to use the art option on your photos? I love playing around with some of mine and making different images.
I love the sound of your kitchen remodel, very good ideas, much better working kitchen. Not only because of the getting older and easier aspect. Drawers make an awful lot of sense for most of us. I use them at both houses and the storage options are much, much better. Also, extra pantry and countertop space is a lot more convenient.
It's been a few hours since you posted, is the small fire under control yet? Hope all is ok nearby and you aren't downwind of the smoke. :)
Changed my profile pic, not a ghost man anymore. :)
    Thank God
I'm glad fire died down, always an uneasy feeling having them too close. Dirty ash is awful to have to clean up, did it settle on house and window sills?
I'll check out your kitchen ideabook later this evening, I'm in very bright sunlight at the moment, can't see pictures as well as I'd like.
Have a good sleep, hope you're already dozing away :)
thanks roo, i'll chreck out the olympus.
