I like the darker color, and to tell you the truth, I had to look hard to even see the shutters on the house. The black just doesnt stand out, so yes, I would just remove them. Pick a mustard color similar to your old color for the door, maybe then, it will seem more familiar to your friends and family.

I think it looks great. I'd pick a yellow that matches your daylilies. I'd get rid of the shutters which are hard to see.

I love the dark color. While it's true that the black shutters don't really stand out, I think removing them will leave holes in your new siding. The shutters can stay; they are unobtrusive. Yellow for your front door will be beautiful. I think adding a window treatment with a light back in that large front window will go a long way in adding brightness to the whole vision.

I like the color but not the black shutters. I think landscaping is what’s needed, hide the metal pipe & utility thing ( electrical ?) via paint & plants. Looks like the front entry could use railings. When your friends say ”it’s so DARK” just say ”Thank you, that’s what I was going for”.

A few of my friends that favor very traditional design & / or ”Tuscan” type decor dislike my very modern MCM home. I can tell by the look on their faces. Doesn’t bother me at all.

Which is the front, the porch or just the gable covering? The stairs need railings. I love the dark color but the black shutters not so much. Due to the holes already in your siding I would do white shutters.

Leah, go to your local landscaping company and have them come out and draw up a plan. You can then do it little by little following the plan. It takes away that feeling of being overwhelmed and wondering what to plant and where to plant it.

The gable is the front- right now we don’t really use that entrance, we use the side porch because that door is not usable- it’s 109 years old. I agree, that porch needs railings- ideally I’d love a porch going across the front but not in the budget. I’m thinking of a trellis on one or both sides of the gable with something climbing.

It’s gorgeous! That blue is terrific. I agree a yellow door will be perfect. You can change the shutters to match the trim, but taking them off might leave holes.

I love that dark color Leah, try lightening up all the porch and steps to a medium gray. I would paint the foundation stone the same color as the steps all the way around. You could go with or without shutters, but lighten those up to the same gray but a shade or 2 darker. A very soft yellow on the door would be inviting and look good with your white trim. I would add a window box to either the upper or the lower window depending on your landscaping. If you choose the top window box idea, you need more of a dense and taller landscape to anchor it.

I, also, probably would want to put some sort of railing up that coordinates with the side porch. ( I have older parents who appreciate a railing on my steps).

I love it, too! Once you get trees and plants in, it will not seem so dark. Love the idea of a yellow door-maybe a soft yellow? ETA: Yes, yes, yes to removing shutters. Do it now before there is any fading of the siding.

I’d add a window box under the window next to the door. Love a farmhouse.

Careful of window boxes. The dripping water from the soil can ruin the siding below.

Make sure that you can fix the holes with patch and paint before permanently removing shutters. Are they in top of the siding with screws? Any hole in the siding is an opening for water to get behind it.

I’m putting new shutters on- those are the old. They put them up after the installation- I thought I could decide after I saw the siding on but they just put them up. Then they broke the lowers so they are buying me all new ones. I’m going ahead with it because of the existing holes.

I think the color is great . I’d keep the shutters because of the siding holes . They would look great in white. A nice contrast.

They ordered black...I may change them someday but for now they’ll be black.

Shutters are very easy to spray paint another color.

Once you change the door color you’ll know what you want the shutters to be.

My husband wants a butter yellow and I was thinking the color of those day lilies. But I like butter yellow too.

Our house went from white to medium gray and then to a dark (but bright) blue in a big remodel. I wanted dark and picked the color. But after 15 years of a light-colored house and months of looking at the unpainted Hardie, I completely freaked out when I saw the blue. Two years and a lot of DIY landscaping later, I'm very happy especially because we live near bike/walking paths and random passers-by often comment positively on the color. A yellow door will look so great on your house!

You mean day lilies of golden yellow those are pretty my grandmother had them and she also had the orange ones

Make sure to use native plants for your landscaping. Pollinators will appreciate it.

I love it, and love the yellow door. It is probably just the unexpected change that has people commenting it is dark, as if they don’t like it. I would change the shutter color, though. The black is disappearing.

I just came across SW Enjoyable Yellow on another thread. I like the orange undertone compared to BM Yellow Clover.

Yes, Enjoyable Yellow is definitely a bette, richer color. (I’m on that same thread with you @ffpalms…)

I love the dark blue with yellow door! Find a wonderful specimen tree (in my region I’d pick I either Japanese Maple or Katsura) as the landscaping star to bring in the yellow or maybe a chartreuse green with some height to the landscape. The dark blue will make the tree color sing!

I LOVE my dark siding, get so many compliments about it. ( I still need to paint out the electrical line 😉)With a yellow door, I’m sure you’ll love a dark scheme as well. Go for it!

Enjoyable Yellow or Butternut will be beautiful on your door. The darker Butternut is quite dramatic. I am leaning towards that one to counter the dark house.
