Staining grout from white to grey

I just had my small bathroom retiled with porcerlain mosaic hexagon tiles. I didn't consult my wife before choosing grout color and went with white, but we now wish that we had went with a grey. (I understand now that with white mosaic tiles, you want a darker grout to make the pattern show.) Does anyone have any experience with or advice on staining lighter colored grout darker? I read up on grout stains, and the Mapei Grout Refresh stain and sealer seems like one of the better products (though apparently not easy to apply). It's unsealed, so I think if I apply it right I could probably get the stain right (uniform), but can anyone speak to how long the stain will last? Will the color last many years? We are thinking of selling in a few years and don't want to pass down to the next owners a bathroom floor that needs to be restained every year or two. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you do it correctly on clean, dry, grout, with the correct applicator, it will be a lifetime solution.

Thanks! This is very helpful. Glad to know that, if done properly, the stain will last. Anyone else on here have success giving their grout a generally permanent stain?

you can also just apply another coat of grout, it will adhere.

Funny that you think the grout should help make the tile stand out.

I prefer to use a grout to match the tile, I like to see the tile, not the grout. ... that's why we have 31 flavors. as for darkening the white, it will darken with wear.

No, this is not a design rule. It is simply personal choice and/or which one looks best to achieve the overall look you want for the space. Myself, I tend to match grout to the background color of a tile to make the grout blend into the tiles. I prefer not to highlight a grid pattern.
