The 'right' way to do it is however it works. Your plants look good, so why worry?

Ecologically speaking, the right time to cut them back is early spring when temperatures have hit the 50s. That allows insects to overwinter in their stems. They will be more attractive to look at over the winter and I assure you they will be just as attractive in spring.

Catmint are becoming for me one of the perennials that seems to love challenging the height and width definitions. I’ll have to prune in late spring just to keep it from spreading 4.5 feet. Frank, yours looks better than mine!
