An appropriate sized rug depends not just on the size of the room, but on the shape of the room (rectangle? square? irregular shape?) and the arrangement of the furniture in it. A large room with two separate seating groups might need two medium-sized rugs, while a medium-sized room with all of the seating positioned entirely on one rug would need a larger one.
