To give a sense of space in general, use light neutral paint, and keep as much natural light as possible. If you don’t need window coverings, don’t use them. For a sense if height, hang tall, narrow art, or arrange several pieces vertically to draw the eye up. In your room, paint the bulkhead and column the same as the walls.

To make things easy just eliminate the mauve paint. Use the paint color currently on your walls.

That current paint color provides a great backdrop for furnishings, art and accessories. Keeps the area bright and spacious.

Paint trim, walls, and ceiling all the same color. A light neutral. What is on the wall now is fine. Selecting furniture that is lower rather than higher (sideboards, chair backs, seats) also helps make the ceiling appear higher. Choose glass surfaces - table tops, end and side tables, so you can see through them. Get chairs with open arms and backs too.

Just realized the wall is recessed.

Consider a vertical striped wall paper. You will have to remove the raised panel to do it, but it is worth it. Change the ceiling light to one similar to this...again a vertical effect.

Or paint the recessed area the color of the walls and hang art high to draw the eye up.

Add tall plants. Photo has a lot of plants, and you don't need that many, but I love the look for in front of a window. You could push the vertical window shade back and open the room to the natural light.

I do not know that plants make spaces feel bigger but nicer usually. Get rid of heavy vertical blinds and use solar shades that allow full virew of the outside . As Kendrah suggest paint the ceiling the same color as your walls. This tends to make ceilings appear taller.
