I would choose a large format in the lightest option. You already have a lot of dark in the room.

I would probably also paint the walls white for a fresher, modern look and to compliment the existing Island counter top.

Within the limits of your two choices, I'd pick a lighter slate over travertine. Too bad wood isn't an option as that would have been ideal with your farmhouse elements (mixed cabinetry, wood floating shelves, lighting style and wood backsplash). I've only ever had wood floors in my main living areas for continuity, so haven't experienced hard tile underfoot in a kitchen on a day to day basis.

We recently installed a tile floor after years of wood and I'm so glad we went with tile. I don't worry about drips or spills, I can steam clean the floor, and a (washable!) throw rug adds softness underfoot. We went with a limestone-look tile that comes in large format and is very similar in style to your travertine photo (Pietra di Ostuni in Avorio). I second tlynn1960's recommendation to go with the lighter option to balance your navy blue base cabinets, dark vent hood and dark pendant lights.

I second TDemonti's comments. When we remodeled we put in tile b/c the dogs had scratched up the vinyl pretty badly in our old Kitchen. At the time, I had no problems standing and working on it for long periods.

Fast forward 10 years, and it started becoming an issue on my back and feet -- I wish now I had gone with hardwood and accepted the fact that it would have to be refinished every decade or so.

I've used the GelPro mats and they help, but I wish I had something more comfortable.

(It was a battle with my DH -- he was afraid of water damage and dog scratches. I finally acquiesced since he didn't have many opinions overall and I pretty much had the final say in most cases.)

I hate tile floors they are incredibly hard on knees , backs and feet . Wood floors ahve been used in kitchens for eons they are no more or less water proof than tile in a flood .24 48 tile will not work IMO in a space already finished they need a huge a mount of skill to install the floor has to be perfet and no way to use thm is such cramped space . The best for tile is 12 x24 in this type of space Do the same wood as the rest of the house and have the best look for sure.

I would go lighter, not darker. And for all those who have trouble with tile: EVA Birkenstocks as “house shoes.” Problem solved.

Your blue cabinets and pale countertops are really pretty together. I put in vinyl flooring that looks like acacia wood in my main space, including the kitchen, as I don’t like cold floors underfoot, and didn’t want to pay the cost of raw wood, which was the only way I could have had a completely flat floor. I hope you find a material you like soon so you don’t have to live without flooring. If you do decide to go with tile, try having a padded underlayer put in.
