Yes, what you show is definitely marble. That is a beautiful stone. You can have it refinished as Joseph Corlett said, but it will inevitably etch again. People who love the look of marble don't mind the etching. The etching would have been less visible if the counter had a honed finish rather than a polished finish. But even with a honed finish, it will still etch.

Unfortunately, your contractor is correct, you will have to "live with it". People do get accustomed to the etching and stop noticing it. This is one of those cases where it is up to the homeowner to do their research on such an expensive purchase as stone counters. There is a lot on this forum and elsewhere on the internet regarding how some stones are misnamed, and it is up to the buyer to look them up to see whether they are granite, marble or quartzite.

I want to add to my previous comment that you should look at your contract/paperwork with your counter contractor. If it says specifically that you are buying granite, you may have a leg to stand on to demand replacement of the counter. Or, it may be quite difficult, it depends on the contractor. Then you have to ask yourself whether you will find a different stone that won't etch and also that you think is as beautiful as the one you now have.

Your contractor is incorrect. Refinishing and MORE are not inexpensive, but they are a permenant fix.

As indicated, this is a marble. If you love the look of the stone, do the MORE Anti Etch as indicated and have no worries. You would probably be looking in the ball park of $100 sq/ft+/-. for this treatment on the horizontal surfaces, OR you can hone as indicated but it will still etch but not be nearly as noticeable as the polished finish.

Seems like MORE is the way to go, but I would reach out to the company that sold you this and see what they can do. They may be able to pay for the MORE, or at least part of it. If they misled you into believing that was something different, you should be entitled to some compensation. That being said, you did pick a very beautiful stone.
