galium aparine (possibly, but am terrible at screen ID) , aka goosegrass, cleavers, sticky-willy and other names for this annpying weed. Can cause quite an unpleasant skin reaction for some people. And stick to our socks and woolly sweaters forever.

galium aparine doesn't look like it and the leaves aren't sticky. I have done several searches but can't find it so far. The prickles on the little balls are very stiff and sharp when green. I don't know what they are like when dried out. It has taken several hours for the reaction on my skin to go away but I think the raction was because they are so sharp and stuck into the skin leaving red dots everywhere. I will be more careful removing any others that pop up.

Is Geum canadense closer?

Geum canadense looks more like it. It just appeared everywhere this year. It will be something that I will have to keep monitored. We have an outdoor kitty and the neighbor's outdoor/indoor kitty thinks that he lives here if we are outside and those burrs would get in their fur. I tell his Moma that he likes to garden and is a great weeding buddy.

This is a Sanicula species. They are difficult to distinguish from each other without flowers. Apiaceae

The majority of obervations in northern Georgia are for Sanicula canadensis. I'm leaning toward canadensis too.

That might be it I will try and get better pictures. I think I pulled it all up but there may be a few that escaped.

I was botanizing at the woods the other day, walking the path when I noticed the most beautiful Illinois Rose, Rosa setigera, about 20 feet away in the woodland/savanna. When I returned to my car, I realized my pants were covered with those little, but pesky Sanicula bur-balls. They are easy to remove from sweatpants, not sure about other fabrics? They would definately be harder to remove from dog hair. I also noticed the Geum canadense is currently blooming. The burs are much easier to remove compared to Hackellia tickseed and Bidens beggarticks. Ticks must have really been a problem with the people who made up all our common names.

Ive pulled several Sanicula canadense out of my shady, ephemeral garden this year. I don't find them very attractive. They were spreading around very fast. I often mistake them for buttercups or white avens. Maybe that's why they call it Snakeroot. They snake people. The Sanicula and Geum fill the same ecological niche. They colonize the forest floor, forming large swathes, but they eventually thin out as larger native plants move in. All the Sanicula that I pulled out this spring probably hitched a ride their from me lol.Hmm?

To get a species ID it must be keyed out with the specimen in hand. Photos won't work.
