Kitchen remodel idea

Please share your thoughts on this kitchen. I have a similiar layout and thinking of using the same finishes for my remodel.

Way too cramped, with too small aisles, and the island is an obstacle to working. Also greatly underlit.

How is this under-lit? The lights aren't on, but there's 6 cans (maybe 7 - can't tell if there's one over the sink) and 3 pendants. Aisles too small? Maybe if you weigh 500+ pounds; for the rest of us, that 4' between the counter and the island is plenty wide.

If it were me, I'd rather have a peninsula than an island in this space. I also think that the space itself is blah.

It's nice to have 48" between the island and the perimeter cabinets, I can't tell what the clearances are here. 42" is the minimum recommended by the NKBA. I also can't see all of the refrigerator wall, but I wouldn't back it into a corner the way that one is. I suggest moving the frig away from the corner with a pantry cabinet so it lines up with the aisle. This makes it more accessible.

I would want cabinets to the ceiling. Prefer no angled corner cabinets. Hard to say aisle distance from a photo. What’s your actual layout?

I said 4' based on the width of the floor planks -- they look to be 12" wide.

Kind of blah. Cabinets to the ceiling is always great for storage. Using the countertop material for the backsplash usually gets you this look. If there had been an interesting tile, it would have gone up the wall behind the hood (and given the room more pizzazz).

48” is cramped for 2 people to be in the kitchen - you will not be able to open a drawer or lower door and have someone walk past. Much better to have cabinets around the perimeter with a peninsula.

    I like it.

It doesn’t look too bad but the overhead cabinets are blocking the light from the window. I would consider doing overheads to the ceiling on the end wall only and perhaps some open shelving beside the window. The island does look narrow, is there sufficient space behind it to make it a bit wider without obstructing traffic flow?

48" aisles are fine for two people. Even for more people, as long as the general layout is good. I would move the fridge down from the doorway, closer to the island. It ensures you can open the doors, and it's nice to have the island closer for removing food/putting away groceries. And definitely cabinets to the ceiling. So you never have to clean up there.

We have a few similar features in our house. Like cabinets to the ceiling. Have 48” between cabinets & island.
    A couple details to consider:
    • Significant thickness differences between your countertops & island while they both look white and similar.
    • Hood looks a bit dainty for the space.
    • the black island seems a little dark - wondering though if there might be something else in your house to pull it together better.

Read the discussions here before putting quartz behind a range. And definitely cabinets to the ceiling! Good luck!

The dishwasher needs to be on the other side of the sink

Yes you would not be able to access the dishwasher and oven at the same time.

Thank you all for the feedback. I’m looking for more feedback on fhe color scheme and finishes vs. layout and space between island and perimeter Cabinets. What does everyone think about the color of floor? how about the light fixtures? Trying to go for a modern vintage/organic look. Keep in mind this kitchen isnt accesorized at all. I would probably put in a vintage runner and round oak table under the rattan light fixture.

I really like the flooring. It's difficult to find a medium-toned wood look without a lot of bossy grain. I don't care for the black island, it looks a little harsh. A navy or olive would be more pleasing.

The floor color choice is nice. It probably will work in every room of the house. It has a slight gray undertone, so be aware of that. Floor choices are forever.

And I like the fixtures they chose for over the eating area and island.

It’s a neutral palette. White kitchens have worked for decades for that reason. The shade of white matters a lot, and the island can be repainted if you tire of whatever choice you start with.

I dont mind the finishes - pretty understated. I think if your house has white trim this could work well (for me it wouldn’t work as well in a darker house with oak trim etc but I like the kitchen to flow with the rest of the house)

Love the color choices of the cabinets, countertops ,hardware, backsplash and flooring. I would not do a black island. In fact, I would not do an island in this kitchen at all. I would do a peninsula instead. Yes to cabinets to the ceiling with crown molding.
