Most of the interior Timberframe of our new construction is now up and we can really get a feel for what it will look like. There is one bent that we weren’t really expecting. It’s on the TF plan, but with so much going on, I didn’t really see it or understand what it would look like in 3d space. Anyhow, it’s between the stairwell and the great room and supports nothing. (First picture, bent is circled) To me it just looks very awkward sitting there as it has no real purpose and the ceiling will be another 12 feet above it. Also I want floating stairs there with an I-beam monostringer that goes into a landing midway and then makes a 180 for another monostringer up to the second story. I feel like having this extra TF bent is just distracting from the focal point of the stairs. So, now we are trying to figure out how to fix this. The welder has suggested removing the top and front pieces along with the 2 elbow braces which will leave us with 2 scars on the back posts (see where arrows point on first photo). He has suggested some metal plates on the spots where the mortise and tenon joints are and also putting the same metal plates on the other side of the landing so it looks intentional design). Another idea is to put some pieces of wood there to look like ends of wood stubbing out from the other side (see 3rd picture below for an example of this). Husband suggested cutting the top front corner out and leaving the corner elbow next to the landing, but given where the landing will be, I’m not sure how that will look? I think too busy?
I’ve already got my architect looking at it too, but also appreciate all ideas. Thanks in advance!
