Earlies Just Now Blooming

last modified: 3 years ago

A lot of my early bloomers either put up just one or two scapes or did not bloom at all. Now, many weeks later, I'm getting FFOs and additional scapes blooming. It's kind of nice to have these usual June faces in July.

Spacecoast Francis Busby did not scape for the longest time, and then just put up one scape. Perhaps I'll get some more later in the year. The FFO was yesterday.

Busy Being Fabulous - I moved this one in early April. It was always surrounded by dormants with huge foliage. I thought if I moved it, it might have taller scapes and more buds in the future. In any case, it only put up one scape in its new place, which started blooming earlier this week.

Core Values put up only two scapes out of its 10, and they are still blooming.

Tart With A Heart had two scapes in early June, and now has two more that have started.

Fighting Fire - I have two clumps of this. One put up two scapes at the usual time and started blooming the first week of June. The other did not start blooming until last week. The one that did have blooms early now has one rebloom scape and first scapes on two fans.

Princess Diary did the same thing - two scapes blooming at the right time and four blooming much later.

Seedling (Karelia X Palace Garden Beauty) X This Longing also did this. I first thought its clump had died back to only four fans, but eventually all 11 showed up. Three fans bloomed in June, and now I have scapes on four more of the scapes. Since its been so hot in the 90s and there's been no rain for awhile, the eye and edge is much lighter in color than usual.

Orchid Linen started blooming on two scapes in the middle of June, and it now has two more scapes that are just starting.

Moon Shimmers put up all its scapes on schedule, and will finish blooming sometime next week.

Summer Kate - It's last bloom may be the prettiest one!

Great color on the seedling, nice edge too. Moon Shimmers and Core values are at the top of the list today

I have daylilies blooming off their normal schedule too. I was starting to wonder if I will have many lates this season. Claudines Charm started this week…almost a month early here. one of my clumps of Laura Harwoods is sending up a scape now, a month early for sure. Again, so many short scapes.

Sherry - I had lates that bloomed a bit early too. It's just a crazy season.

Of course, I love Francis busby and Fighting Fire. Mine finished its last rebloom yesterday. Busy being Fabulous is a pretty one, and so is Core Values. Your seedling is lovely with a nice edge. This year they seem to be blooming whenever they want to and reblooming the same way.

Kay - I was glad Fighting Fire shaped up, blooming on all fans on one clump and on two fans on the other. I know you said that one was one of your Weather Warriors. I'm still having trouble with deer sampling blooms despite frequent spraying. At least they're not devouring all the buds. They're just trying some here and there and then moving on.

You're seeing some nice edges--Tart with Heart and Moon Shimmers caught my eye. Later Salters are territory I don't venture into.

Fighting Fire is so pretty and bright. I really like Moon Shimmers and Orchid Linen. You know I have always liked that Karelia seedling. I only had one scape on Spacecoast FB and only two blooms. Neither bloom was photo worthy.

Princess Diary and Moon Shimmers are my two favorites. The form on Moon Shimmers is mouth watering. Just look at that edge..................Maryl

Mantis - Tart With a Heart does seem tender based on how it performed after the deep freeze weather events. Moon Shimmers did not seem to mind the weather swings as much. I went on a Salter buying spree after Jeff died. I've been fairly happy with those two and Sensational Heart.

Kate - I do know you've always liked that Karelia seedling. The later blooming scapes are taller and better budded than ever. I think I have one scape that is 27 or 28 inches with 19 buds this time. So its stats have improved. Moon Shimmers does have a fantastic edge, but unless its very hot that edge can cause the blooms to have weird shapes. That's why I haven't posted a photograph of it until now. Also I have trouble getting the right color on that one. It's more yellow than my photo shows. Orchid Linen is short and prone to thrips, but on the rare occasions when it has a clean bloom, its a gorgeous one.

Maryl - I bought Moon Shimmers for that edge, and I have crossed it with my light yellow seedling. I'm hoping for some pretty edges on the babies. It's nice to have those Princess Diary blooms in July.

What a mixed up year it has been. Many of our lates are blooming now at our peak. I am glad your reluctant earlies decided to bloom.

I always like SC Frances Busby--such an intense color. I also like Busy Being Fabulous. Our Tart with a Heart looks like it will not bloom this season. It survived the winter but is still very small. Your seedling is very pretty. I like the veined look to the eye with the darker edge around it.

Nancy - I had a couple of lates that bloomed early too. Maybe your Tart With A Heart will bloom later. It is a knockout, so I hope it will eventually flourish for you. I managed to cross it with both of my red-eyed seedlings, and I hope the pods will stay on. I lost a lot of pods last week when temps were in the 90s for several days.

Isn't that crazy about SC Francis Busby. Mine has been blooming since June 28th here. One thing is that it hasn't faulted to give nice blooms. Just too bad they are nerly kissing the ground. Your seedling looks good. I like the color and edge on it.

Julia - I'm glad your blooms on SC Francis look good, even if they are on short, short scapes this time. Thanks for the seedling comment!
