do down stem as far as possibe and try to cut or pull deeply. it may or may not grow back. watch for others

get down on your hands and knees with a hand shovel, tablespoon and paint brush and expose where it is connected to the tree.. and properly prune it out...

i wonder if the stuff they put on crabapples should be applied... to stop future suckering... just a thought.. i could be wrong on that.... it might be crab specific...

So both of you are saying take out the main branch, not just the green leaved portion?

No im not saying that

just the green sprout

t thought it was coming from the base like a sucker.

but dig down in there to get out the origin of green sprout.

To my eyes it appears to be coming from the main stem. Just cut it off close to the main stem and hope it won't come back.

I'll be crawling around there tonight, doing some clipping! The shrub is currently 6' x 6' and truly stunning. I highly recommend it if you have room.

Yup. I love Ninebarks lots but as you said and as I recall was discussed in a spring thread "if you have room" is the key phrase.
