You need a fence or a dog running loose all day/night. I use a 5 foot fence from the big box stores on the posts they sell. Maybe a better idea is a 4 foot fence above a finer fence that will keep rabbits out. A 50 foot roll of fence will enclose an 11'x14' or 10'x15' space.

I would think a deer would eat the leafs and new growth stems before the tomatoes. Could be a 2 legged dear? leave the rest of the plant for a while. If was a deer they'd probably come back and eat the plant.

If deer, you do need fencing. If only the tomatoes are gone, it could be another varmint, like a raccoon.

I use the green coated wire fencing from Home Depot. I think it’s 4’ tall—? 5 ? For in- ground raised beds that gives me the fence height plus 6-12 “. Deer can easily jump this height but I’m only fencing in areas 4 x8 or 4 x 4 so they don’t jump into a small enclosed area. I can get my hand through the fencing, but also , with square or rectangular beds, leave gaps for removable panels, made from same fencing with thin tall plant stakes threaded through the edges for structure.

For some large containers containing 1 -2 tomato , pepper or such veggies, I just wrap it in a circle using the container as support, and can “ unwind “ as needed, or for whiskey barrel size I may do a 3/4 circle & then a narrow “ door”.

This also seems to keep rabbits out, but maybe that’s the container or raised bed sides; certainly would not keep baby bunnies out, nor raccoons & possums.

I do use deer spray here ant there but don’t like to spray veggies, plus, the veggie crops are annual and long time in reaching maturity so it really bites if critters get the harvest. Whereas, if they eat the few hostas I stubbornly insist on growing, or some other perennial foliage, it will grow back, I can relocate, etc
