New challenge…boy names

Long story short, we are going to meet this little guy tomorrow.

Not the best pic. I’ll have more tomorrow.

We have been batting around names for a while but mostly focused on girl names because we have almost always had females and given a choice, we would have picked a girl again. But here he is, and unless he’s satanic, I think he’ll be ours!

This is Lucy, who’s about to be a big sister.

Please throw out some boy names! We tend to like human names. So far my list (created before seeing the pup) includes

Gary (Carrie Fisher had a frenchie named Gary)

Beau

Frank

Buddy

Bugs

Aww, Buddy is sweet. ”Little Buddy”, like either the Skipper’s name for Gilligan, or Buddy the Elf (named for his ”Little Buddy Diapers”).

He's adorable. I like Buddy or Bugs (1st choice). The Ricky and Lucy is too cutesy.

When I got my kitten, Emily, I sat with a list of names and called them out one by one. When I got to Emily, she came over to me, so I figured that was her name!

    Congratulations on the new cutiepie.

He could be a Cookie, or a Macaroon Aka Mac.

I do like Buddy, or Bubba. I often call our dog Buddy, which drives my dh cuckoo because he says you cant call a girl Buddy. I find that baffling.

    Maybe he’s a Roscoe.

Or a Leroy, that’s French too, Le Roi. I like the alliteration of Lucy and Leroy. And if you ever liked NCIS, Mark Harmon played Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Buster came to mind when I saw his picture, but Ricky is cute too!

I would definitely name him something that does not end in the same vowel sound as your existing pet or does not otherwise rhyme with it.

I love choosing names so I am happy following this along.

I know a lot depends on things that we (here on houzz) don't know such as neighbors' names, friends and family as well.

I do like the people names. To add a few more-

I remember a friend's son named his dog

    Norman and another one

Stanley. I still chuckle when I think of it.

My hiking bud got a new dog, but ended up with a name for her that they didn't choose. When they went to get her, the little 5-yr old girl handed them the puppy and said, "Her name is Cora because that's my name too!" So Cora it is!

Kswl, interesting — why? Pretty much all our dogs have had names ending in Y (or that sound). But I do agree that names like Lucky or Louie could be too similar to Lucy.

My BFF has a dog named Leeroy. I had Cookie on my list but I think people would assume that’s a female name?

I really wanted to change our last frenchie ”Kitty” because she was just so catlike. But I didn’t decide that until she was, like, 3 years old. So I didn’t do it. So for girls, Kitty was on my list and so was Bunny. And the Bunny idea led to adding Bugs to the boy list… I still think Bugs/Bugsy is cute esp for a smaller dog, but DH is unconvinced. He is in full-on Gary mode.

LOL i have too many gary's in my work world to embrace it for a dog name but I do like human names too. I've had Grace (Princess Grace), Dutchess and Tiffany (not my choice) for female dogs and for male, Josh and Beau.

Whatever name you choose, I am so excited for you-- he is adorable and very lucky to join your family. ❤️❤️❤️

Bugs is a great name for your dog, I love it and him, he is precious!

Names that rhyme or end in -ie or -y or are alliterative sound to me like those families that name all their children similarly: Robbie, Ruby and Rudy, or John, Jacob and Jared, Lilly and Lacey, etc. It has always struck me as kind of lazy, choosing the first name with care and then subsequent choices bc they sound cute or sound like the first.

Thanks everyone ... I love how enthusiastic this group is regarding new pets! We are now brushing up on our housetraining info — I randomly came upon a book in a little free library about a month ago and it’s a great refresher — and we went to PetSmart to stock up on some puppy gear. Because we are getting the pup sooner than expected, we had to go through our calendars last night and rearrange some things. We have a wedding out of town in a month, breeder has offered to keep Bugs when we’re away but she’s 1.5 hrs from us so adding 3 hour round trip, then airport, etc etc is not ideal. We will be at our beach house so I happened to find a dog sitter in our neighborhood there who is also a retired vet tech and is available! So hopefully that will work out but if we meet her and change our minds, we’ve got the breeder as backup.

Hoping the introduction goes well. Lucy is good with other dogs in general but I don’t think she has actually encountered such a small puppy before. She might think he’s a rabbit and chase him!

He is adorable! Love the name. Did Lucy smell him on your clothing when you go home? That's a good start.
