You'd get more help if you showed your entire plan for the kitchen. In no scenario would I want drawers behind a door. For anything. Every day kitchen tools are actually easiest grab in a crock standing right near your stove: ) on the counter top. Wooden spoons, spatulas, soup ladle, spaghetti fork, tongs, etc.

Three drawers should be sufficient ...... no cover or they will possibly be quite shallow .

No matter, I find any drawer behind a door to be extra effort for no real purpose. especially for a frequent access. But that's me.

I need to see the kitchen plan and the second you jerry rig Ikea cabinets the warranty is void. I do wide drawers for pots and pans and 2 deep drawer and then 2 shallow drawers at the top for utensils , cuttlery etc who designed the kitchen with none of that planned.

I would do the second option rather than hoping to match cabinet doors.

this is a fairly common hack and not that big a deal. You can add magnets to the drawer you use the most (and the back of the cabinet door). If done correctly, that drawer will pull out with the lower drawer, but can be pushed back in.

Adding inner drawers doesn’t void the warranty as IKEA sells inner drawers. Converting a 12” cabinet to a 12” trash trash/recycling cabinet (which is what the second option is doing) could void the warranty on that door, but nothing else.

In reality, the IKEA warranty is all over the place. There is no central mechanism for warranty approval and it is all handled at the store level. So put on your nicest smile, be ultra respectful and hope the person likes you.

Thanks everyone, kitchen design is done - this was just the last detail to sort out. We're going to try this hack with vertical cutlery / tools instead, but with a hidden top drawer - similar to what you've suggested @HALLETT & Co.!

Yes that’s exactly what I did- mine is in an 18” cabinet so I have SIX canisters and clear counters!

Maybe you could incorporate a knife block (example). I didn't see where knives were stored in the linked discussion. I presume you wouldn't want to drop them into canisters.

Take a look at rev-a-shelf inserts for more ideas. Pretty sure they have a pull out with a knife block and bain marie inserts for utensils for 12" cabinets - depending on whether you're a "build it" or "buy it" person. Or if you become the latter after being exhausted from being the former for most of your project ;)
