I notice fruit on trees can often fall off before maturing -- don't know why. One of my black cherries has thousands of small fruits that gradually fall before maturing until only a few reach maturity. Perhaps conditions.....

Wow...I just read the top of the thread..but yep, very good catch Bill (sounds identical).

We did have a six week dry spell..possibly enough to stress it into dropping berries. It's also possible something decided to snack on them.

Given that I have a lot of berry eating birds (catbirds, mockingbirds, robins) that's also a possibility, though I would have expected green holly berries to be low palatability.

Ilex v. is considered a 'wet land' plant that thrives in moist to wet conditions.

If I didn't plant things that say not to plant in hot, dry sites, I wouldn't have very much planted in my yard. ;-)

So, I just check mine every so often (weekly?).

There's a layer of mulch around mine and the soil feels very loose or non-compacted.

If I dig my finger down and the soil feels cool and moist, I don't worry, if it gets difficult to dig my finger into, it's time to water. :-)

I read Ilex v. will adapt to dry upland sites over time but aborting berries is one of its tools for survival.

Maybe you haven't seen me say this..but I live in a swamp (poorly drained clay with high rainfall).

However, as I said..a long dry spell.

Wish I had some of that clay! ;-)

birds wont be eating the berries at this stage. i have had them drop berriesin dry spelks too

For a minute, I thought that possibly the poor draining soil might be a problem.

But according to the U of M it's not.

• Best soil properties for winterberry:

  • Soil pH 4.5 to 6.5 (acidic).
  • Adaptable to many soil types - sandy, loam, or clay
  • Moist to wet soils
  • Tolerates poorly-drained and compacted soils
