Is this a bad wallpaper job?

I’ve never had wallpaper before. We just built our “hopefully forever” house and decided to wallpaper the powder room as we are not physically able. It was $450 to do the powder room. I’m usually pretty easy to please and contractors love that. But I think this is a bad job. But I’m not sure as I’m inexperienced and may be biased. I can’t afford new paper and am not sure what to do. My walls were completely flat, and these are just SOME of the issues.

Bubbles, tears, gaps, etc.

I couldn’t edit for some reason. There are many seams that don’t quite match up and I have probably fifty separate photos of different problem areas.

the finished product does not appear to be good.

    Very bad job

That is bad. Those seams can't be fixed.

Did you have plenty of material for the job? Although that isn't an excuse, because a professional would have told you they couldn't do it with what you had on hand.

    Did you pay already?

    Completely unacceptable

@chispa I did pay already. I purchased more than I thought we would need so we could match it and there were several untouched rolls left over.

    That’s a very bad job .

It's not a good job. Do you have enough left over to redo it?

WOW why did you pay is always a question . This is a horrible job but now no hope in you know wher of getting money back and next time be there in my experience you never walk away and let someone do work without you checking. Some of the pics look like the walls are textured is that right?

@patricia I was at work and historically we did stuff ourselves and he had great reviews. The walls aren’t textured- brand new and completely flat!

@palimpsest No, we don’t have enough left

I would try to get him to come back and look at the bubbling and peeling (which I assume happened after the fact). Then you could point out the matching issues and bare spots while he's there and see what he says.

I like deegw’s suggestion to ask him to to come back to fix the problem areas. If he balks, show him the photos and tell him you will post them with an honest review.

You are not being picky. That is indeed a bad job. Deegw has a good suggestion. It is a very hard lesson to learn, but now you know to never pay anyone for work that you have not inspected.

I asked him to come back once and he fixed one wrinkle and didn’t do the rest. I don’t know a lot about wallpaper but I’m concerned it won’t be salvageable if I ask him to fix it again and he messes up. I put in a claim through the app I hired him on and he declined to respond. I think I may have to leave the honest review @ffpalms suggested.

Im sorry but this isn’t salvageable . Maybe some of the seams could be made flat, but the mismatching cannot be fixed. You will need to remove it and replace or remove and paint . Or live with it. I’m guessing that this quack did not prep the wall with sizing so it will be difficult to remove . An expensive lesson but an app is no place find an installer. Wallpaper hanging is an art .

I’m super new to this sort of thing- why would an app be a bad place to hire someone? Angie’s List, etc.

It's very hard to find people just by recommendation unfortunately. Even personal recommendation sometimes. If possible you have to actually see examples too these days. Which isn't always possible. I got a glowing recommendation for someone who turned out to be awful. It just turned out the person who recommended them just had low standards.

There used to be more competition in trades like paper hanging before, so people had to have good skills to compete. Now I am not so sure. You can barely get one person to call you back let alone have people to choose from.

Trades pay to be on the “apps”. They are really not much more than modern day yellow pages. I have had good luck finding some trades using one of the services, but that was years ago. It’s hard to find good trades now. After the recession in2008 the construction business lost a lot of people, and they still haven’t gotten enough people back in. Sometimes realtors give me good advice as to who to hire (sometimes they don’t). Sometimes the online reviews are real, sometimes they’re not. I would ask a local paint store that sells wallpaper who they recommend. Sorry you got the short end of the stick.

Did you by any chance pay with a credit card? If so, you might dispute the charge with your credit card company.

I think the problem these days with hiring from an app is that most skilled workers are so busy they have no need to go thru an app for customers. They are kept overly busy via word of mouth. So the people advertising on the apps may be less skilled who don't get word of mouth recommendations because they do shoddy work. Not all, of course, but that is what I think often happens. Same with hiring big box store workers. Most people who are highly skilled aren't going to need to get business via HD or Lowes.

Sorry you had this experience. Hopefully, there can be some resolution either thru the app or your card company. Last resort is small claims court. Might be easy to get a judgement, but much more difficult to collect.

Not good. No cure but a removal and re do. You won't get a nickel from the guy unless small claims court and its just a total amateur result.........UNLESS?

The mismatch issue was because of repeat and the number of "cuts and drops" . WHO informed you the number of rolls/bolts to order? Having left over portions of rolls that are useless is commonplace on a patterned paper. Were the walls prepped with a tinted primer such a Kilz? I hope so, or it will be a BEAR to remove. Honestly, the paint at caulk and trim in a "just built" home doesn't look good either, so was that this guy, or the builders painter?

Bubbles can be potentially addresses with a razor blade, painting all the trim to navy / match of back ground will also help disguise poorly done cuts at trim line......which is fairly sad looking paint job on that trim??

My credit credit card would consider this an exclusion because it is an installed product and there is both product and service here.

Other cards may vary but I wanted to make you aware of one possible outcome.

It's certainly not the best job I've seen.

If you have enough paper for one wall, have someone new! remove the paper (if you aren’t able to) and just do one wall (behind sink or the uninterupted wall).

    @maureen that is lovely!

I personally have hesitancy to blast someone on social media for something that does not go well. I have high expectations and I don't like it when things go wrong because of carelessness with measuring or, not showing up or taking shortcuts. But sometimes I feel bad when it's more about their skill set not living up to my expectations. I obviously don't recommend them to anybody else.

When I was in college maybe, my mother had the powder room papered and it was not a good job. It wasn't a terrible job, but it wasn't good, and I remember helping to hang pictures and such in a way that covered a couple things. Being young I said "Well you didn't pay him did you?" And my mom said "Of course I paid him" and I said "Why?" and she said "I am in a position to afford wallpaper and afford to pay someone to do it, and those things are both relative luxuries. I can afford to change it in a few years when I find someone better. Bad seams are not going to take food out of my mouth. This poor guy is just trying to make a living. It's not my tendency to punish somebody for not being perfect at their job."

Honestly, she was in a position to shrug it off as a bad job and do it over. She did have that luxury, and I know not everybody does. But since then, I have tried to evaluate whether someone who does something for me is trying their best and they just don't meet my standards , or if they are not really trying.

Well said Pal - he may have papered for lots of people and they were fine with it (my parents got their master bath painted and I thought it was very poorly done but my parents were thrilled)

It's every bit of a $450 job. That would be more like $1400 from the skilled paper hanger that does the most work around here. People think bathrooms are "easy" because they are small. That is precisely why they are NOT easy.

We had a powder room done last year, 7’ X 7 1/2’, and paid $500. The paper hanger finished in 2 1/2 hours and you can barely find the seams.

Personally, I don’t think one would be doing anyone , installer or their clients, any favors by not letting them know the installers skill set is severely lacking . This job was done very poorly , no one is being overly picky about the result.

Reach out to the App you used, their customer service and send all pictures and emails, texts, asking to come back and make this right. If you are hesitant about asking them to make this right, right that in your complaint.

I have heard of people who have had bad experiences using someone from an App and the App sent out a qualified person to rectify the problem on their dime.

    Anyway, it’s worth a try.

I am not saying you should let it pass completely necessarily. Just that I personally hesitate to disseminate my dissatisfaction widely for public consumption.

I just had a fourth area wallpapered by someone who came highly recommended. The first three jobs were perfect. On the fourth job, he was not there, it was his son and someone else.

One of them, I don't know who, talked in a cartoon voice the entire day, and the other one giggled and laughed all day. And the quality was not very good around the door openings. And when they left for the day and I examined the work, I contacted the owner and said that there were problems, and that I really did not want the pair of them to come back and finish the job, and that several pieces would need to be taken down and replaced. And that I did not want the same pair of guys there because I did not trust them to finish the job adequately and I would wait six months if necessary for him Personally to come and do it, and if I wasn't happy with the job at the end he would be coming to redo it himself anyway, or coming to take it down and calling it quits.

The next day, I could not be there, but apparently one of the guys was replaced by someone else. (The cartoon voice guy I am assuming was replaced) and the pair of them worked quietly. I hadn't said anything about the weird voices, I just said that it was apparent they were not taking the job seriously. If necessary I would have gone into detail, because I can't imagine he would wanting them to behave like that with his really well heeled clients. (His firm is qualified by various manufactures to hang paper that runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars for the paper, like DeGournay and Zuber, I am small potatoes which is why I didn't get the A team the last time I think)

Anyway it looks Okay, better than I see a lot of times but not up to the full potential.

I decided to let it go but I canceled the job I was on the books for and the paper for the last room I was going to do and painted instead.

The difference between what I said in my other post and this one was the behavior of the guys. I was convinced that their fooling around was making them not take the job seriously.

That is not a good job. You are NOT being overly picky. Big patterns require a lot of wallpaper to match properly. You apparently have extra, so you may have enough to properly fix. There are cheap fixes that you can do to hide some of the problems. Adding a thin strip of molding around the top of your ceiling, painting white over some of the wallpaper to make the ceiling margin consistent, or cutting thin slices of wallpaper off the top to make the ceiling margin consistent would help the ceiling.
