Maybe a magnet will help you locate the approximate position for investigation.

Even if we find the spot, is there a remediation opportunity to bring back the mattress to use ?

The only thing i can think of is to use force and push it all the way through.

@wsea - Yes, I know. Though I went really crazy and mad at her the moment I came to know of the situation. Now, I'm thinking of what must have made her even try this. She has been behind me to draw a design on the mat for her to try stitching. She has been so much interested in it and watching videos and giving it a try. Its just that the silly/mischievous part of her brain woke up and pushed her do this. And the thing is she is still cool and don't have any issues using the mattress stating that must have already gone deep inside :-)

So, I understand there is very minute to no chance to get this needle out forward or backward - right ? If yes, then we will need to explore options to cover it so that it will never ever poke anyone no matter how hard you roll or sit or jump on it. If a mattress topper can help provide the similar comfort and feel but save us from any incident in the future, I'm all good for that option.

(Still I see that it is hard atleast for me to erase this incident from my mind so that my anxiety doesn't block me every time I try to use it)

I would try the magnet first. Maybe you will locate the area. Is she 100 percent positive that it went in there?

Can you open up a seam in the mattress to see if you can find the needle?

It isn’t just tweens who do this, most of us who have sewn all our lives have done something similar. Try the magnet first if that doesn’t work try pushing it through. Raise that section of the mattress with some books so you can see the bottom of the mattress, press down on the top of the mattress with something flat like a cookie sheet or bread board. While you press down have someone watch for the needle point to appear on the bottom side and grab it with a tweezer or pliers. I hope this helps you. Encourage her to keep up her sewing skills!

We tried our luck with magnet but the needle seems to be too small or too deep (possibly due to multiple attempts to press and feel the needle) to get attracted to it. Didn’t even feel any pull factor.

@kulbers - yes, that was my idea too to cut around the spot she pointed and look for a needle. My husband says it’s not worth it and will ruin the mattress. Atleast now we don’t feel it anywhere on the top layers.

@Joy VG - yes we may have to try this out. Because we suspect that it had made it half way thru since we could not feel anything till the level we should push from the top. The mattress is pretty dense and probably 10” height. Couldn’t think of anything that will let us firmly press it hard.

By now, family minus me is taking is easy that it’s ok and shouldn’t really hurt 😞 and it all the way inside. But I cannot forget that it’s inside.

You don't have to forget it's inside, you just have to reassure yourself that it's never going to appear at the top of the mattress. Since the sharp point is going downward, there is no way for it to work itself up to the top. Since you cannot feel it, it has already embedded itself far below the surface. It may (but probably won't) work itself even farther down where it could come out the other side. But with a mattress that thick, with the size of the needle, it's going to stay in the center of the mattress, never to be heard from again.

If a mattress topper makes you feel better, then get one. But I think if you just buy a quilted cotton mattress cover, get another needle and try to poke the eye side up thru the cover, you will see that it's not even going to go through that.

Stax: great gadget! I have been a seamstress (hobby only) for decades. When I sew, my husbsnd always finds a loose pin or 2 on the floor, that I have missed. Those pins have “a mind of their own”.

First of all, apologies for the delay in responding. Thank you again for all the advices that you’ve provided. I just got access to a 2” x 8” magnet which I’m yet to try. We will see how it goes. But I’m starting to feel little better compared to day 1 🙂.

I’m surprised by your last response and even wondering why you have deleted your original post about the needle finder. But I did already check the product out. It’s definitely cool. But may be not worth to buy in my situation. It would be definitely useful for someone who is actively involved in sewing.

As I mentioned in my original post, I sincerely appreciate all the support this forum provides. I have personally benefited in my last scenario and I even came back and provided an update to my post to show everyone how we competed the project. Also, wondering if you have read my responses to everyone who took time to provide their suggestions. So I do have a request for you, no hard feelings - Please let’s not judge anyone too quick. We never know what’s going on in their lives. And priorities tend to shift or change on a daily basis so sometimes the bigger problem of yesterday may seem so negligible relative to other issues. Last few days have been so tight that I couldn’t respond back on this topic. That shouldn’t give an opportunity to troll someone. Thank you again and have a good day!

Funnily enough I had a similar situation that I just resolved with a thicker memory foam mattress, when I was changing the bedding last week my dog fell down and I knocked over a tray which had a needle/thread on it and unknowingly it got stuck in, couple of days ago scratched my left leg in bed but thought it was something on top and put it out of my mind, circle round to an hour ago and it happened again to my right knee while getting up.

Since it was near the surface and at an angle I felt for it by pressing down and running my fingers across, then depressed around it and pushed it up, through and dragged out with tweezers!
